Plans to celebrate Black History Month with a lunch of fried chicken, cornbread and watermelon did not go over well at a private high school in Concord.
Administrators at Carondelet High School, an all-girl Catholic school, are apologizing to students and parents this week for proposing a menu that some complained perpetuated racial stereotypes, NBC Bay Area reported.

That there is a Black History Month does not perpetuate racial stereotypes? When is white history month?
To: artichokegrower
We don’t need a month.
I’m dying to know which genius came up with this idea.

Can I eat fried chicken and watermelon on groundhog day?
This same old story happens every single year.

For added realism they should just have the kids go around playing the Knockout Game on each other.

Too bad. From what I understand from my son, fried chicken and watermelon would win the award for “Best School Lunch of the Year!”—HANDS DOWN!!!

A few years back a similar situation took place at another high school, I think in Arizona. The plan there was to have a meal of BBQed ribs and collard greens and other items. Same sort of protest.
Such reactions raise at least a couple of questions:
Why is serving “soul food” considered insulting stereotyping? I don’t know of other ethinic groups who consider honoring their heritage with traditional food to be an insult.
And how can there still be school administrators who don’t know that it’s considered insulting stereotyping?

I’ve told this story so many times, but it is worth going over once again.
My daughter came home from Jr HS (back in the 90’s)
and said “what is there for me”,?
The black students have the Black Students Union, the Latinos have The Cinquo de Mayo Club and there is the Asian Club.Well, all the privileged groups would go to the clubs during study hall leaving behind one ostracized group of students.
Public schools should be outlawed.
Yes,my daughter now a conservative.
