I thought that a lot of the damage to roads and bridges is caused by the behometh trucks that clutter them, and make driving unsafe for the rest of us. Why not charge the trucks a meaningful fee according to size?

As a member of the Transportation Industry, I can tell you that we pay above and beyond what is in front of your face.
For example, there’s the 12% Excise Tax. If you purchase a semi for $100,000, you pay an additional $12,000 to the Federal Government. That goes for every $300 tire @ $36 and other various parts.
Next comes the 2290, Federal Highway Use Tax @ $550 per year per standard vehicle. (Varies according to weight)
Then, the license fees, typically around $3000/vehicle per year according to the number of states you run.
Then we have an International Fuel Tax Agreement, which you pay the fees and surcharges every quarter according to state regulation and usage.
We also have state fees and permits, etc. on and on....
So, the Transportation Industry is paying it’s ‘fair share’.

maybe you should look into how much a 18 wheeler pays in road tax, before you shoot off your mouth.it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
