Going postal, in American English slang, means becoming extremely and uncontrollably angry, often to the point of violence, and usually in a workplace environment.
In the oddest solicitation to date, the United States Postal Service (USPS) has submitted a pre-solicitation notice for ammunition to add to its inventory of government supplies.
Never, in the last ten years, has the USPS posted solicitations for ammunition of any kind via the government’s Federal Business Online website.
Other agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security and the National Weather Service have made unusually large purchases of .40 caliber S&W ammunition, and agencies such as the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA)and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have made purchases of military grade weaponry that far exceeds any demonstrable need.
It can be assumed that the USPS is jumping on the lead and brass bandwagon, despite being billions of dollars in debt, and unable to pay its retirees their pensions.
Going Postal
In 1972, the USPS requested and received permission to make all US Post Offices “Gun Free Zones”, and have even claimed regulatory authority through the parking lot and even to the public sidewalk beyond. However, since that went into effect, it was not the average citizen that caused unnecessary deaths, but rather, their own past and present employees:
•Edmond, Oklahoma in 1986
•Ridgewood, New Jersey in 1991
•Royal Oak, Michigan in 1991
•Double event in 1993
•Goleta, California, in 2006
•Baker City, Oregon, in 2006
In total, 40 postal workers and family members have been killed by current and former employees. This is where the phrase, “going postal” came from.
With this current solicitation, speculation exists if the USPS will be manning high traffic areas now that Kentucky Senator Rand Paul’s amendment to the Postal Reform Bill to allow Concealed Weapon Holders to lawfully carry in Post Offices.
This pre-solicitation comes two days after Paul’s proposed the ban removal.
Going postal may now take on a whole different meaning the next time you’re at the Post Office.

I can’t believe they deliver mail to a good share of the places they do without guns.
It’s to keep the post offices themselves secure, more likely. Honestly, we have had a spike in whackjobs participating in mass shootings of formerly safe sectors of our society. Best to secure those locations. If you put a bunch of cops or National Guardsmen there, people would scream, “BRAVE NEW WORLD! BIG BROTHER!”. Better to just have the arms on standby and avoid as much lunacy as possible.

The Post Office has had armed personnel for many decades. My grandfather was one. During the depression, he would shepherd high value mail and parcels containing stock certificates, bonds, etc. from brokerages and banks until they got into the system. (He carried a nice Colt .38, BTW).
Now if they’re buying 300 million rounds or something, that might be a whole ‘nother ball of wax.

I'm not sure where you came up with that implication from what I posted, 2nd.
I'm just pointing out that the Post Office has had armed officers long before many of these other alphabet agencies were even in existence. Now if someone wants to posit that armed Post Office agents should not have ammunition for their handguns, or should be disarmed, we can discuss that.

I’m somewhat aware of the history of the Post Office and realize that postal inspectors have been armed for some time. I’m also aware of the trend towards militarizing any and all government agencies under the last three or four administrations and their aping of the Geheime Staatspolizei.

Agreed. 50 years ago, situations where 4 cops with revolvers would have sufficed are now met with 20 paramilitaries with full battle rattle and an MRAP.
Maybe a small percentage of encounters may require this response but it certainly appears if they don’t use these “resources” on a regular basis, they won’t continue to get funding for them.

That the only federal employees allowed to be armed on duty are commissioned and non-commissioned federal officers, who are engaged in a police, intelligence, or military capacity.
In addition, all military and paramilitary equipment, weapons and ammunition, and other resources maintained by non-police, intelligence or military federal agencies are to be turned over to the FBI, for disposal or sale as surplus.
