Regarding the polluted, undrinkable water now reported at Russian residences where Winter Olympic athletes are staying, Im reminded of the opening lines in the Preface of Solzhenitsyns Gulag Archipelago.
Those lines are
In 1949 some friends and I came upon a newsworthy news item in Nature, a magazine of the Academy of Sciences. It reported in tiny type that in the course of excavations on the Kolyma River a subterranean ice lens had been discovered which was actually a frozen stream and in it were found frozen specimens of prehistoric fauna some tens of thousands of years old. Whether fish or salamander, these were preserved in so fresh a state, the scientific correspondent reported, that those present immediately broke open the ice encasing the specimens and devoured them with relish on the spot. The magazine no doubt astonished its small audience with the news of how successfully the flesh of fish could be kept fresh in a frozen state. But few, indeed, among its readers were able to decipher the genuine and heroic meaning of this incautious report.
My buddy who lived in China for 7 years says the pics out of Sochi make China look positively modern.
this is not looking good for Putin.odds are we are going to hear these hospitality horror stories all next week.what next?some toilets wont flush and misc plumbing problems? bears roaming around hotels looking for food?
This is Russia, from Communism to Kleptocracy. Not much of a difference between the two and we are almost there with the Democrats and GOPe trying to usurp our Constitution.
and I thought Putin was the leader of the world!,guess not? then who? Hillary? Christie?
Dont worry . . . Be Happy.
“this is not looking good for Putin “
Considering that probably at least a billion or two from the Sochi construction contracts are now in his personal accounts he probably doesn’t care how it looks.
Not bears, but hordes of wild and hungry dogs.
Silver lining: at least the Olympics are not being held in Detroit.
Saw an article today with tweet after tweet from journalists bitching about the dreadful conditions they were being required to endure.
Then it occurred to me that these are the people who by and large are cheerleading for Obamacare, and I realized it is rather perverse to be worrying about Soschi when people over here by the tens of thousands are losing the health coverage they were promised they could keep. Other thousands are finding the premiums/deductibles are shocking, can’t see the doctor they were told they could keep, etc., etc..
Don’’t let these boot-lickers distract attention from what is really important!
I lived in three remote parts of China for 7 months in winter ‘76-’77. It was far worse than this in China back then.
If people had watched the Jim Bakker Show, they would have known to bring a Seychelle water bottle with the new Advanced/RAD Filter that filters out radiation.A sports-sized bottle filters 500 gallons of water.
What you must remember is that the news media is deliberately grasping for every negative about Sochi so as to make Putin’s anti-gay stance crumble in popularity.
Aquacera, just sayin’.
I’m pretty sure Sochi is positively wonderful compared to the average working class city in Russia. It’s a resort town on the Black Sea so it would be a tourist designation for Russians and nicer than normal areas. I spent quite a few months in Constantia Romania a few years back and it probably has a much higher standard although similar by Western standards to Sochi. Really nice places are probably few and far between with all the private residences being rented out to those who had the means far in advance and for huge profits to the locals. I don’t know what people really expected. By Western standards this area just came out of pre-WWII conditions 20 years ago and just isn’t up to our standards and there was no way it ever would be. People’s apartments are probably pretty decent inside and for those that can are probably renting out quite a few - just my guess from being around there and everyone thinking nonstop on how to make a buck. I remember asking why lots of buildings facades were crumbling or in disrepair and even fairly recent buildings and was told by a construction guy that because of limited wages and pay the workers would sell a portion of the material and add inferior free sand and stuff to pay for their beer and drinks after work.
Good ole “Pollutin’ Putin’, the environmentalist wackos best friend.
You protest his non-existent environmental policies and he “wacks” you.
