ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- Enough petition signatures have been verified to place an initiative seeking to legalize marijuana on the ballot this summer in Alaska, election officials said Tuesday.

We signed an international treaty, and there are federal and international laws against production, sale, or possession of cannabis. All these states legalizing or decriminalizing pot seem to be ignoring international law.
What will UN or INTERPOL do?
So Alaska will be the place to go for gold and green and salmon.
Picture a couple of stoners sitting on the hood of a car staring at the aurora borealis and going “Whoa, gnarly! I’m so faded!”
keep them fat and happy... that’s the mindset
it’s today’s version of ‘bread and circuses’... ‘pot and pizza’
yea, record unemployment (17%+ in some states)... best to undermine the motivation of society. brilliant! /sarc
Wait, are you actually hoping for a UN intervention?
No, not hoping for one, but I’m wondering what the rest of the world will do as we become a rogue nation, with cannabis farms and distribution systems. Fearing an intervention, maybe? I have not thought it all out yet.
How will Columbia feel, for instance, since we have dumped paraquat and napalm on their fields in the past.
Being a stoned addle brained idiot in cold snowy Alaska will get you killed a lot faster than if you live in California. There are a lot more opportunities for the pot heads to self select for serious injuries and death

You bet- look at the obit pages for Alaska Daily News out of Anchorage, check the ages at death, then compare it to the obit page of the LA Tmes or Daily breeze. 40, 50, 28, 60 vs 70, 80, 88, 95, now and then a 60 something.
But, I know people who live in Ketchican and Anchorage, there are already lots of stoners there already.

This is true, speaking as someone who’s lived in both places and still lives up here in the north. The only positive to come from legalization is that everyone who wants to get high is already getting high, so I would guess that chances are the number of users won’t increase when it is legalized.
The unforeseen consequences of legalization will become apparent sometime around 2030.
As far as the forseen consequences, I’m glad that I’m going to retire from teaching high school English in a few years. You may or may not have any idea how the current crop of potheads drags down learning in our school, but at least the high cost and illegal nature of the drug prevent persistent use.
Another predictable consequence: Every August, when school starts, I get a boatload of buzzed out kids who have been smoking and drinking all summer. There are observable behaviors and thinking disorders associated with those kids. Of course, once it’s legal, weed use by those who want to do it is going to be ubiquitous.
Glad I’m going to retire soon. I predict a lost generation, perhaps two or three. God help us.
Imagine if the states were doing this with gun laws.
Treaty violations will likely simply be ignored. I don't think anyone wants to see civil violence over stoners. They aren't worth it.
Thanks for your testimony and first hand experience on how bad marijuana is for teenage brains that are still growing and forming by the way. That legal marijuana will make this worse. Ideal Democrat voters in the making
Do other teachers notice this too when the school year starts up again? Buzzed out students

Oh, yeah. The cognitive damage is up front when you’re asking kids to read and write every day. Every teacher sees it, too. Symptoms include leaving out words when writing a narrative; sluggish response time; inability to recall simple, one-step directions; difficulty retrieving information taught the previous year; and, if the students stops using, bitchiness and irritability about four to six weeks after stopping. (I’m comparing these kids to those who spend all or most of the summer sober - hey, they’re teenagers, so a certain robust amount of spacing out and attitude is normal. However, you can target those getting high. With the advent of computer-assisted reading programs, you can even measure it. And since I live in a remote village, most of the time, a kid will just honestly fess up about drug habits once he or she gets to know you, so you can compare what they say with the evidence on the page.)
I know a lot of us expect weed to produce a crowd of Obama zombies (which might be the zeitgeist leading to the popularity of the zombie motif), but anything could happen, from complete collapse to Puritan rebellion. The advent of brain-interface technology might make marijuana intoxication seem like a quaint Paleolithic habit, too. All I know is that I don’t know, I’m not Nostradamus, and even Nostradamus isn’t Nostradamus.
Much appreciated!!! I am always against marijuana legalization. Marijuana is not a joke. I know a 70 year old guy who smoked weed for 40 years. His memory is not very good. Of course you can have similarly forgetful 70 year old who have not smoked pot
