CryoSat shows Arctic sea ice volume up 50% from last year
Watts Up with That ^ | February 5, 2014 | By Anthony Watts

Posted on 02/05/2014 1:32:59 PM PST by Brad from Tennessee

Measurements from ESA’s CryoSat satellite show that the volume of Arctic sea ice has significantly increased this past autumn.

The volume of ice measured this autumn is about 50% higher compared to last year. In October 2013, CryoSat measured about 9000 cubic km of sea ice – a notable increase compared to 6000 cubic km in October 2012.

Over the last few decades, satellites have shown a downward trend in the area of Arctic Ocean covered by ice. However, the actual volume of sea ice has proven difficult to determine because it moves around and so its thickness can change.

CryoSat was designed to measure sea-ice thickness across the entire Arctic Ocean, and has allowed scientists, for the first time, to monitor the overall change in volume accurately.

About 90% of the increase is due to growth of multiyear ice – which survives through more than one summer without melting – with only 10% growth of first year ice. Thick, multiyear ice indicates healthy Arctic sea-ice cover.

This year’s multiyear ice is now on average about 20%, or around 30 cm, thicker than last year. . .

Whataya mean? The data SUPPORTS global warming... it always does!

Exactly!

Unusually warm weather - that's man-caused global warming!

Unusually cool weather - that's insignificant or that supports rapid climate change!

Unusually dry weather - that drought is AGW caused!

Unusually wet weather - that is AGW again!

More storms? The models predicted that! AGW!

Fewer storms? The models predicted that! AGW!

Unfortunately the above is not satire, it is all too true. I have quite literally heard every single one of these. The upshot is, no matter what happens, the AGW and their newer incarnation as rapid climate change believers try to use any and every single weather event and statistic as "proof" of their agenda. It would be funny and sad at the same time if they weren't so serious about it.

Oh wow is that gonna jam up things in my neck of the woods come spring! I’m also wondering what the 50 or so inches of snow we’ve gotten this winter will do when it melts. By the way cripple how much “global warming” did you get today? We only got 4” or 5” inches up here but the blowing and drifting made a mess of things for a while.

It looks as if CryoSat is volume and JAXA is area.

That is phenomenal year to year. Are they saying 40 % increase in multi year ice ?

Following the link, CryoSat says:

"While this increase in volume is welcome, it does not indicate a reversal in the long-term trend."

That all sounded so sciencey. Whatever you said, has a compelling ring of truthiness to it. I certainly don't want to appear skeptical; so put me down as a true believer.

That sounds better. Can believe 20 % in one year.

So we are about 20 % colder then one year ago.

Yep, and when the ice melts in a glass the water overflows... well, at least according to Al Gore.
