This would change the complexion of the Electoral College and I have not seen a map but which party would gain the most from this division?

It doesn't matter. Such things have to be approved by Congress, which will NEVER agree to give California that much more clout.

Article 4, Section 3:

"New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new States shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress."

“It is obvious that we need a breath of fresh air in California government, and creating six new states allows the refresh we need,” Mr. Draper said in an email after the study was made public over the weekend. “California, as it is, is ungovernable. We need our state governments to be local to us.”

Draper thinks the issue of being "ungovernable" can be solved by yet more government. This is similar to thinking that the solution to getting sick from food at a restaurant is to order more courses.

How about if we just give it back to Mexico instead? We could tap into the oil reserves there then too....

O.K. with me as long as we combine NY, NH, CT, ME, RI, VT, PA, MD, MA into one state (call it Communetticut) and give it two senators.

Without LA and SF, the rest of the state would be fairly conservative (unless things have changed that much since I left).

I lived in the Sacramento area. That area turned out the largest number of Bush supporters in the country during the Gore tantrum back in 2000.

I’d like to see CA split off. The people living in the conservative areas should not have their livelihoods destroyed by the rich liberals in LA and the SF Bay Area.

Since this is clearly a power grab on the part of the Democrats, how about proposing an alternative?

Home rule for parts of California. This would just require their state legislature to set up a power-sharing agreement so that for most things, parts of the state would be unto themselves; and each part would have a veto over legislation that affected the entire state.

Broad parts of existing state law that overlapped into regional authority could be abrogated. For example, the endless, nit-picking environmental rules. If there was no “overlap”, than an autonomous region could ignore them.

Of course, this would be like pounding nails through the feet of the Democrats, who are terrified of the prospect of losing nit-picking control over the lives of other people.

The northern states should get along fine....as long as they control the water supply for the south.

This would add 10 more US Senator’s to the mix, most of these 10 would be in strongly democrat states, I’d say two to the ten new senators would be conservative the other 8 socialist.

I'd be stuck in West California.

They'd probably tax me off my land.

Neither party will gain from the plan. The Constitution prohibits creating multiple states out of one or one state out of parts of two or more others without the approval of Congress. That approval will NOT be granted because there are too many small states who will see this plan for what it is—a power grab by that type of person who has cause much of the economic chaos in this nation.

Do NOT Californicate the United States!

Illinois needs to make Cook County its own state and free the rest of the state to thrive normally. It would also save Cook County because we’d have a lower tax state right next to us.
