CHANGE FOR BETTER SERVICE
Have you ever noticed that the typewriter keyboard places the most frequently used keys far apart from each other? The purpose of this arrangement was to slow down the typing speed. Keys on the machines of the 1800s used to jam if the typist went too fast.
About 40 years ago, the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard was developed. On this keyboard, the most frequently used keys were in the home row, and the right hand did 56 percent more work than the left. Typists using this keyboard could increase their speed up to five times without increasing in error.
Still, we continue with a keyboard designed to be inefficient. Why? We don't like changes. Mark Twain once said, "Only a wet baby welcomes a change."
However, today's military requires innovative, out-of-the-box thinking. Whether we like it or not, we change every day.
Prayer: Almighty God. Help us to be more creative, thoughtful, and pro-active in serving our country. Amen.

The cold has broken, briefly. It looks like we're back in the icebox next week.

Dear God: I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman, Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, National Guardsman, or Merchant Marine feel alone or forgotten.
O Israel, hope in the Lord; For with the Lord there is loving kindness, And with Him is abundant redemption. And He will redeem Israel From all his iniquities.
Psalm 130:7 & 8

Julia Ward Howe
From Today in U.S. Military History:
"The Battle Hymn of the Republic" was first published in "Atlantic Monthly" as an anonymous poem.
"The lyric was the work of Julia Ward Howe and was based on chapter 63 of the Old Testaments Book of Isaiah. The Battle Hymn of the Republic soon became the most popular Union marching song of the Civil War and is still being sung and to the tune of a song titled, John Browns Body. Julia Ward Howe (b.1819-1908) was an influential social reformer and wife of fellow reformer and educator Samuel Gridley Howe. She was prominent in the anti-slavery movement, womans suffrage, prison reform and the international peace movements. Julia Ward Howe was the first woman elected to the American Academy of Fine Arts and Letters in 1908. Ralph Waldo Emerson, said: I honor the author of The Battle Hymn
she was born in the city of New York. I could well wish she were a native of Massachusetts. We have no such poetess in New England."

"Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword: His truth is marching on.
(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on.
I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps, They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps; I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps: His day is marching on.
(Chorus)
I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel: "As ye deal with my condemners, so with you my grace shall deal; Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel, Since God is marching on.
(Chorus)
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat: Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet! Our God is marching on.
(Chorus)
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me. As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free, While God is marching on.
(Chorus)
He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave, He is Wisdom to the mighty, He is Succour to the brave, So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of Time His slave, Our God is marching on."
(Chorus) |

A letter written to Laurel Hegy of the 208th ECB. It gives an interesting (at least to me) look at WWII code talk.

Guidance Needed
February 2, 2014
Read: James 4:11-17
St. Nicholas Church in Galway, Ireland, has both a long history and an active present. Its the oldest church in Ireland, and it provides guidance in a very practical way. The church towers over the town, and its steeple is used by ships captains as a guide for navigating their way safely into Galway Bay. For centuries, this church has reliably pointed the way home for sailors.
We can all certainly identify with the need for guidance. In fact, Jesus addressed this very need during His Upper Room Discourse. He said that after His departure the Holy Spirit would play a crucial role in the lives of believers. As part of that role, Jesus promised, When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth (John 16:13).
What a marvelous provision! In a world of confusion and fear, guidance is often needed. We can easily be misdirected by the culture around us or by the brokenness within us (1 John 2:15-17). Gods Spirit, however, is here to help, to direct, and to guide. How thankful we can be that the Spirit of truth has come to give us the guidance that we often so desperately need. Set your course by His life, and you will reach safe harbor.
Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land.
I am weak, but Thou art mighty;
Hold me with Thy powerful hand. Williams
The Spirit is a reliable guide in all of lifes seas.

Keep that fireplace stoked!
It’s 21 and FOGGY at my house. We had early fog, but it’s coming back....can barely see across the street. It was sunny as I ran errands.
No snow in sight.
