Finance Minister Yair Lapid delivered a scary speech on Wednesday. At the Institute of National Security Studies conference, Lapid warned that if we dont accept US Secretary of State John Kerrys framework for negotiations, the Europeans are going to take away our money.
Lapid claimed that Israels economic future is dependent on surrendering Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria to the PLO. If we dont, he said, the EU will abrogate its economic association agreement with us. And such a move on Europes part will cause serious harm to our economy.
According to Lapid, If negotiations with the Palestinians stall or blow up and we enter the reality of a European boycott, even a very partial one, the Israeli economy will retreat, the cost of living will rise, budgets for education, health, welfare and security will be cut [and] many international markets will be closed to us.
On the other hand, if we give up Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, Lapid promises that we will all get rich.
It took less than 10 minutes for Lapids remarks to be exposed as utter nonsense.
The EU delegation to Israel flatly denied that the EU is considering abrogating the association agreement.
There has been absolutely no consideration in the EU of the abrogation of the association agreement. It is not in the cards, a statement by the delegation said.
As for the economic benefits Lapid promised Israel would reap from giving in to the PLO, here too, his claims do not withstand scrutiny.
First of all, Israels economy will be dramatically weakened, not strengthened, by a deal with the PLO.
As Economy Minister Naftali Bennett explained last week, the establishment of a Palestinian state in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem would cause unprecedented damage to the economy. Like the de facto Palestinian state in Gaza, such a state would serve as a launching ground for missile attacks against Israel. And from Judea and Samaria, the Palestinians would have the capacity to destroy Israels economy with just a few, relatively primitive projectiles.
As Bennett out it, Imagine if just one missile per day fell on [Israels technology hub in] Herzliya Pituah, what that would do to Israels economy. If even one plane which was supposed to land at Ben-Gurion Airport crashes [due to terrorism] per year, it would crush the Israeli economy.
Beyond what the Palestinians would do, there is no reason to believe and every reason to doubt that Europe would reward Israel in any way for giving its capital and heartland to the PLO.
In remarks last week meant to counter Bennetts statement, Justice Minister Tzipi Livni inadvertently explained the true situation Israel faces from Europe.
What money? Obama has already spent it all.
She is a superb writer, and what she says is true.
The people who still are as bigoted as during the Holocaust are still saying Gaza is occupied, even 8 years later.
Israel is the only country who has its internal sovereignty
violated by more than a dozen countries telling it what to do.
Kerry is disliked in this country and hated in Israel.
Egypt is no longer a friend of America, and Israel is on the verge of just ignoring us.
Meanwhile the Pallies, they are not living up to any of the useless agreements like Oslo, Madrid. The incite hatred, wouldn’t accept any Israelis to live in a Palestinian state, even Israeli Arab citizens. They want the Palestinian state to be for Muslims only, but they don’t recognize Israel was formed to be the Jewish state among-st 22 Arab Muslim states.
The peace process was supposed to be in the interim a time of cease fire, yet Israel is attacked every day.
And what have we gotten for the billions of dollars of Palestian aid to the PA, well they haven’t shown up at peace talks for years and years.
Kerry go home the peace process is dead. Abbas is worried the Hamas will kill him if he makes a deal.
Is he the Israeli finance minister?
Can you blame Israel? The damage that arrogant pos occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania and his administration has done in just five years will take decades to repair. If it’s possible
The our in this story is referring to Israel.
Yes it is.
OOPS! My bad. After I read the whole story I realized that ... to embarrassed to retract my post. Thanks for keeping my mistake low key. LOL!
Israel can simply say, if one hair on our head is touched, the straight of Hormuz will be turned into a sheet of glass. Any questions?
Heh heh we all do that. Actually I had to read it again after I posted that because I thought perhaps I was mistaken, and relieved to find that I wasn’t. LOL.
Obviously the lesson of accepting 30 pieces of silver has been lost upon some people...
It appears so!
