Oklahoma House Speaker T.W. Shannon officially announced his bid Wednesday for the U.S. Senate seat in his state that's opening up due to Sen. Tom Coburn's early retirement.

Shannon, an African-American who's starting to build a national profile and is considered a rising star in the GOP, made his announcement with statements on Twitter and his website before holding multiple campaign kickoff events.

" He’s trying to get re-elected to the NRA Board, he’s already served one term there. "

Well, now I've learned two things today. I'll have to remember to send in my NRA ballot if it's not too late.

I hope Speaker Shannon wins. But I also don’t think that Lankford is all that bad.

Excellent. We need to support him to victory. Wouldn’t it be great if the GOP South sent a half dozen black conservatives to the Senate?

He’s got a pretty nice looking wife.

Lankford might not be “all that bad” as CF says but there is a clear distinction, this should be priority primary for conservatives.

I bailed on Cain because of his pizza-deal tax policy. Why keep an income tax? It can only punish success.

>> I also don’t think that Lankford is all that bad. <<

Lankford seems pretty decent from what I've read about him on the internet. Sounds like a humble honest family man who went from a private sector career as a Christian camp supervisor to Congress in 2011. All his positions and record in office are pretty solid. I'm not getting any vibes that he's the “moderate” candidate in the race or the “establishment” choice, as some freepers allege. It really doesn't' make sense to argue he's the “establishment” because Congressman Tom Cole backed him as his successor, when Shannon got his start working for J.C. Watts and Cole, having their support when he ran for the state house and Speaker. Lankford only won the Congressional primary over Kevin Calvey by 600 votes. The only thing I don't like about him is his red hair. (sorry, redheads) ;-)

>> there is a clear distinction, this should be priority primary for conservatives. <<

Shannon might indeed be THE conservative choice in the primary, and might be a much stronger Senator than Lankford, but I haven't been sold on him yet. I'm not about to jump up and support the guy solely because he's a sitting state house speaker with “star power”, as a bunch of freepers did with Marco Rubio when they crowned him the moment he announced (who they swore up and down was the tea party savior, absolutely 100% rock solid on immigration, and shouldn't be compared to Mel Martinez “just because” they're both popular Republican Hispanics from Florida) Look what happened when they blindly trusted that guy. Yes, it would be great if we had more black conservatives in the Senate, but not if the white conservative in the primary is better on the issues and could be a strongly force in the Senate when it comes to fighting RATs.

Bottom line, Shannon's been in the state legislature since 2007. I'm going to look closely at his RECORD and IF it matches the hype, I'll be on board.

Yikes. If Paul Ryan's wife is a Demonrat, that might explain why he's been going off the reservation.

I'm sorry to say that I WAS one of the conservatives who vote for Mitt BECAUSE of Paul Ryan as VP. So that's at least "one extra vote" Mitt got. (Had Mitt choose someone like Condi Rice as his veep, I would have probably voted third party). In hindsight, voting for the Romney/Ryan ticket in Illinois was a waste of time.

Janna Ryan is from a rat political family and is a first cousin of former OK rat Congressman Dan Boren (David Boren being an uncle by marriage whom she interned for).

She worked for OK rat Rep. David Brewster for several years. Her mom held various appointed positions in the state and her grandpa was very active in the George Wallace campaign in 1968.

All that said there is no reason to believe that when she married Ryan (or even before) that she didn’t switch from moderate democrat to RINO like many OK rats from the “Little Dixie” part of the state.

Laura Bush OTOH I’m convinced is still a rat to this day and a liberal one.

Dan Boren BTW is not running for this Senate seat, the rats have zero chance to win it.

It’s been widely said that Cole is a “mentor” for Lankford.

It’s fairly clear he’s the “establishment” pick like Mayor Kirk Humphries was in 2004. Of course in the long run Humphries wouldn’t have turned out any worse than Coburn.

There wouldn’t have been a “long run” for Humphreys, since he would’ve lost the general election to Brad Carson. That was why Coburn got in the race in order to save it from a “Perfect Rovian Disaster.”

I doubt that Carson would have won as Bush won by 30 points and control of the Senate was an issue (I didn’t doubt we would gain but going in with only 51 it was an issue). That’s a lot of crossover votes, no matter how “rovian” Humphreys was.

I was following the race and Carson led in the polls and Humphreys was a subpar candidate (and it was even shaping up to be an retro-style race where the Democrat would carry the rural areas and the Republican the urban). Coburn neutralized Carson by coming from the same rural district. Given that Brad Henry had similarly upset the GOP preference of Steve Largent two years earlier (a good GOP year), it was too risky a chance.

The same problem arose in Colorado with the Rovian drafting of Pete Coors, who was the premier execrable candidate of that cycle (and a similar excuse was that Dubya would carry the state and so would Coors, and that didn’t happen). Had Bob Schaffer been the nominee, he’d have defeated Ken Salazar and would be the senior Senator there today.
