The blizzard of '93 brought more snow than most Atlanta natives had ever seen or will see.
The floods of 2009 brought an unexpected rush of water that submerged interstates.
The winter storm of 2011 took an entire week away from the city.
But the Snow Jam of 2014 might be the single craziest weather day in Atlanta in a generation.
1-to-3 inches of snow, mixed in with an afternoon drive that still hasn't ended has brought Atlanta to its knees again.
“There are certain things we don’t have control over and one of those is the weather. This came rather unexpectedly," Governor Nathan Deal said. "The time frame in which it hit was a very short time frame. And I think we’re better prepared now than we were in 2011.”
Metro Atlanta interstates have been gridlocked since about 1 p.m. Tuesday. Commutes stretched 8-to-10 hours. And that's for those who actually got home.
Thousands have been stranded in their cars just sitting in the middle of the road.

Yeah in the upper peninsula of Michigan there are sticks along side the roads so snowplows can find them. They use straight saplings with the branches cut off stuck in the road shoulders.

I know how to drive in it and have a great vehicle for getting around in it. Those other idiots out there, not so much.
I’m in upstate NY. Temps are rough but we still go out. Roads aren’t too bad. Of course, we know how to drive.
I did the same thing in Arlington Hts-Mt Prospect area, 1956-1967, walked to grade school/jr high/high school every damned day. Only wussies took the busses, and we only had a few of them.
My garage faces north, so I shoveled the drive in front of the garage last night. It’s really slow to melt even when it does warm up, because it doesn’t get much sun.
I remember one really bad winter when my mom
put a picture of a potato in my lunch box.
I would take it out periodically and put the
corner in my mouth to ward off hunger, sure
was glad when lunch time came and I could eat
the whole thing.
Here in SE TN we knew we were in for snow..
when we do get snow its usually gone by noon..
This time its still here...
it was about 30 here for a high yesterday and in the low teens last night..
its going to be 8 tonight..
our snow will be around a few days..
frozen solid but still SNOW...
good thing I moved my car down to the road yesterday morning...
My driveway is still covered in about 3, 4 inches and probably frozen ..
the snowplow came down my road yesterday and it looks like they laid salt..the road is slush..
but at least I didn’t lose power and I can get out if needed..

damn that global warming...it’s a pesky little creature...turning on and off like a light bulb...where’s Al Gore - he’ll write a book and make everything ok again...
My snow shovel is buried deep in my tool shed....I haven’t used it in years...

You Betcha. Still snowing here in the northern OBX of NC.
I won’t pretend I didn’t enjoy the commute this morning. It’s kind of like back when I was in the Navy. The happiest moments were standing between the turbines, a/c off, pouring sweat, boat not moving, reactor scrammed, slinging steam valves open in a race to get a generator back on line before the battery ran out.
We used to mix our lint balls with yellow snow and
pretend it was lemonade.
My mom and I were remonising about having a clothes
rack in the utility room with ten pairs of gloves
drying on it, Those were the days.
Only got an inch in western VA (just east of the Blue Ridge). Usually as soon as it snows here, it starts to melt, but not this one. Roads are covered and there won’t be much thawing going on until at least noon, I expect. High temp will be about 30. Then by late afternoon, it’s all going to refreeze. Some trucks and SUV’s are out and about, but that’s about it.
Good news is, after today, daytime temps are forecast to be well above freezing for a couple of weeks.

I had to draw my own picture of a potato. I drew on the largest untattered piece of my threadbare tshirt. My only shirt.
I flew out of Atlanta yesterday morning before the snow hit. The locals and the media heads were all abuzz about the weather to arrive.
As an ex-northerner I just gotta laugh.
Glad I don't live near there anymore.
