Researchers Find No Significant Health Benefits From Vitamin D Supplements

Healthy people taking vitamin D supplements are unlikely to see any significant impact when it comes to preventing broken bones or cardiovascular conditions, claims new research appearing in the latest edition of The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.

According to the AFP news agency, the study authors reviewed more than 40 previous trials in order to determine whether or not use of these vitamin supplements achieved a benchmark of reducing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, cancer or bone fractures by at least 15 percent.

“Previous research had seen a strong link between vitamin D deficiency and poor health in these areas,” the news agency said. However, the new study “strengthens arguments that vitamin D deficiency is usually the result of ill health – not the cause of it,” and the authors report that “there is ‘little justification’ for doctors to prescribe vitamin D supplements as a preventive measure for these disorders.”

I see you got a couple replies of the variety "when you have none, you need some". Those are correct and so is your post.

Everything we ingest and absorb from water to oxygen is necessary in some amount. It is fatal to have none and fatal to have too much. In the case of micronutrients the most important factor is digestive efficiency. People with healthy digestive systems will absorb the micronutrients they need from food. Those with disorders that prevent proper digestion might be able to use some supplements, but the irony is that supplements need to be digested properly too. Often there will be wide variations in supplement takers, from none to overdose. Some supplements like iron specifically preclude the absorption of others like copper. Thus inexpensive multivitamins can be do more harm than good.

People really need to focus on their entire health and not assume that popping a supplement while snacking on the couch will accomplish anything at all.

$300+++ for 90

You must not have priced off-patent prescription meds lately. Most cost $10 or less for a 3 month supply.

My gym has a limited number of elliptical machines, and thanks to the New Year’s Resolutioners I was using the treadmill for a few days. I ended up with minor tears in each meniscus. I was healed before my doc appointment and he was extremely impressed. I like the guy because he’s a rare doc that doesn’t use surgery as a first protocol. Anyway, when I realized what was happening I upped my D3 dose and added hyaluronic acid.

I’ve been taking Swanson’s 5000 d3 for years...haven’t been sick for years. Just a coincidence, I’m sure.

Haven’t you heard? Now they are trashing omega-3 and are claiming omega-3/fish oil in both pill form and from eating fish itself is a killer.

I don't buy that at all. The only supplement I've ever started to take with which I've noticed an immediate and obvious positive effect was fish oil. I was troubled with heart palpitations. They almost totally disappeared immediately after I started. I made no other changes in diet or lifestyle at the time, so the direct correlation is there as far as I'm concerned.

Lately, I've started eating Scandinavian-style pickled herring again, like the stuff my mom and grandmother used to make. That's basically raw herring in spiced vinegar. Yum!

Pharmaceutical companies have been targeting nutrition supplementation for decades. Initiatives, starting with HMOs and including the pharmaceutical plan for seniors and Obamacare are all geared toward "covered" prescription drugs, rather than "dangerous or ineffective" supplements.

Most people will take the prescription because "it's covered". Those companies have got to be among the biggest fans of Obamacare.

1978 was my last flu shot. I am still alive with very few colds and flu.

No flu shots for me either. My Dr always asks and pushes a little. My standard response: I prefer to not tempt fate.

And also I always like to point out that 25 years ago doctors would recoil in horror at the idea of giving a “megadose” of 400 mcg of folic acid to a pregnant woman. Now it’s medical malpractice if you don’t.

1000iu is hardly anything...have you had the vitamin D3 test? You can likely take 5-10,000iu daily...unless you are getting lots of sun too of course.

In case no one said so...sun is NOT the only way to get vital d...but if you take supplements it must be D3.

Thanks.

I take d3 and k2, they’re synergistic. I’ve had a scratchy throat a few times but nothing like the pneumonia I used to get 2 or 3 times every year in the fall/winter. I haven’t had that since I started taking the d3. Just started taking the k2 last fall.

I also take iodoral. And the stuff you’re supposed to take with that. My thyroid function has gone from iffy to perfectly normal. And my feet are finally warm. Fortunately my internist is open minded about this stuff and doesn’t freak out when I tell him what I plan to start taking. He’s usually either taking it himself or has looked into it enough to know any issues with it.

Yeh because vitamin D can’t be patented and sold for a trillion dollars a bottle.

Just keep taking your vitamins folks.

“...As a weird factoid, rats get D3 by licking their fur.

The cholesterol in their skin secretions is converted to D3.

Maybe we should all sit around and lick our arms. :) “
*******************************************************************

Or perhaps capture rats and lick THEIR fur? On 2nd thought, I’ll keep up by continuing to take my daily D3 cap. It is interesting about the rats though—clever little creatures.

Vitamin D made a big difference for me. I have more energy after starting to take 10,000iu a day. The doctor said after looking at the test results that I was low and should start out at 2,000. I read that you can take up to 10,000iu a day.
I take this amount most days. I also take magnesium and iron a few days a week.

I didn’t know that it was taken for just bones and heart. Stupid people shouldn’t be researchers.

“Daily Mail reports widespread Vitamin D deficiency amongst British children...and slather them with sunscreen”

Those children are deficient in D but it’s not due to sunscreen. My grandson was born there and lives there and was D deficient due to not enough sun shines there and their milk has no D added like ours does.

Grandson is a tennis player, had lessons all his life and now he is in his teens and has a professional standing in tennis and is on the court every day and still has to take an oil of some kind with D in it - he takes this under doctor care.
