Arizona sheriff puts inmates on bread and water for desecrating U.S. flag

Reuters) - Dozens of inmates in Arizona jails run by a sheriff who has been a controversial figure in the national immigration debate have been put on a diet of bread and water for desecrating U.S. flags that hang in each cell, authorities said on Friday.

Maricopa County lawman Joe Arpaio, who has been called "America's toughest sheriff," said 38 inmates were currently getting these meals twice a day as punishment for destroying government property while in custody at six jails.

"These inmates have destroyed the American flag that was placed in their cells. Tearing them, writing on them, stepping on them, throwing them in the toilet, trash or wherever they feel," Arpaio said in a statement. "It's a disgrace to those who have fought for our country."

The punishment will last for seven days, he said, and a second offense would bring 10 more days of the sparse diet.A sheriff's spokesman said the bread provides the daily requirement of calories and nutrients that is necessary. There are about 8,300 inmates in the jail system.

In recent months, the Maricopa County jails have broadcast patriotic songs over the public address systems - "The Star Spangled Banner" in the morning and "God Bless America" at night.

He came here to Indiana for a Republican fund raiser in fall of 2012. He’s a great speaker.
Wish we could clone him.

Sheriff Joe may be making his supporters a little uneasy

If so, it's only because the headline is misleading -- I suspect deliberately so.

Although in paragraph two the "news" agency clarifies the reason for the punishment (i.e., "punishment for destroying government property while in custody"), the clear intent of the headline is to stir up emotions against the sheriff.

Probably pretty strong disciplinary action

Nay...water boarding or a flogging for flag desecration is strong disciplinary action...

Next time these thugs want to desecrate the US flag, bet they will think twice...

Bread and water is probably more than they deserve...

Lot's of Americans are getting sick to death with this BS giving the criminal element more rights and than hard working Americans

Yes, this is Reuters. Mindless, knee-jerk left-wing lemmings. America-haters. Marginally worse than AP, not quite as bad as AFP.

Is the public reaction one of outrage, is it mixed, is it surprising, or ignorant, or non-existant, or approving, disapproving, hated, loved, ignored?.....

The voters that matter (Mrs. Liberty and me) think he's doing the right thing here in our county. "Bread and water" may sound like inadequate nutrition for those who think he is serving Wonderbread or some such, but that's not what it is. The jail takes all the leftover food from a day's meals, grinds it into paste and bakes it into bread-like loaves to be served to prisoners who can't be trusted with even plastic forks, hence the expression "bread and water."

The prisoners in question have proven they can't be trusted with plastic serviceware. Holder and Obastard can bitch and complain all they want, but if the lil' darlings are getting nutritionally sound meals there's nothing they can do about it.

He called it “food-loaf.” It’s the idiot press who coined the term “bread.” He uses the term now, just to pi$$ them off. It’s nice to see that’s working for him. ;^)

Here is a dumb question; Why in the hell has Arpio put flags in cells in the first place? I know many of you here love the guy, but Sheriff Joe is a first class asshat. He pulls stunts like this to get a reaction out of his prisoners. The man is a PR genius, he is very good at manipulating people. He is also a power hungry madman. I’m all for law and order but Arpio takes this crap too far. Think about this, the majority of the people in the Maricopa County Jail have not been convicted of anything yet, many of them are awaiting trial. Joe doesn’t give a damn about the Constitution. We have many other good Sheriffs in Arizona. Leon Wilmont in Yuma County,Paul Babeu in Pinal County, John Drum in La Paz County, and the list goes on. These guys are more effective than Arpio yet they never get the headlines. They are the quiet professionals. Sheriff Joe is a blowhard clown who needs to go away.
