Walmart announced on Friday that about 2,300 Sams Club employees would be laid off, the latest in a drumbeat of retail job cuts to start off the new year.
Bill Durling, a Sams Club spokesman, said the layoffs would target a combination of salaried assistant managers and hourly employees. Certain positions, like telephone attendants, will be eliminated.
We realized we had pretty much the same club structure whether a club had $50 million in revenue or $100 million in revenue, Mr. Durling said of the distribution of assistant managers. What were trying to do is balance our resources.
Sams Club has about 116,000 employees, Mr. Durling said, and the job cuts will affect about four employees a store. Employees will have 60 paid days to find another job at the company. If they are not successful, they will be eligible for severance.
Sams Club will be opening at least 15 new stores over the course of the next fiscal year, which begins in February.

Laying off 2300 workers, but open 15 new stores?

"Laying off 2300 workers, but open 15 new stores?"
Walmart appears to be fine tuning their staff. 2% is not a major adjustment in employee population. Plus Walmart told them they have 60 days to find another position in the company, possibly in one of those 15 new stores.
Remember, liberals HATE Walmart, so the NYT is probably reporting this minor company adjustment with glee.
Look for articles talking about how "Women & minorities hit hardest!" and "If these poor Walmart workers were unionized, this would not be happening!" (most likely true - Union featherbedding would give them jobs-for-life, plus three new shop stewards per store.)
That’s not surprising. It’s increasing the efficiency of each store. If they weren’t opening up new stores, it would have meant even more layoffs.
I call it the Obamacare Dividend.
Let the good times roll.
“CommieCare” is a more accurate name.
I may be small potatoes, but my wife & I are closing our store this year. This will put 3 part-timers (mom’s) out of work and affect roughly 250 customers. The business-unfriendly environment by this administration has killed us. We were struggling before, and now we’re underwater. While we love what we do, the primary focus of a business is to make money. Time to cut the loss...
This happens where I work as well. If you are being laid off and there is a job opening with your title/level, you are guaranteed an interview. The ones who choose to interview usually stay.
As long as they don't cut the person that cooks the chicken.
Sam's sells a full three pound, whole chicken, cooked over open flame, for $4.98. It is delicious and is the best buy for cooked food...bar none {just my opinion}.
I hope most of the 2300 laid off are cashiers. There are always too many of them crowding the Sams Clubs.
“.. My wife and I are closing our store this year”.
I am sorry that you had to do this. Prayers for you two and your employees. I know the stress you are under must be horrible. ((( Hugs)))
Costco must be kicking their butt.
To those effected by these layoffs who voted for DIMs/LIBs... Bwaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. You reap what you sow.
I agree! Love that chicken, and the price is right. My husband and I can make that chicken last 3-4 meals.
Our family doctor decided to take an “early retirement” before the implementation of Obamacare. His wife was a PA who already spent most of her time doing paperwork instead of practicing medicine. While the office closure was bad for me personally, I was totally sympathetic to their frustrations and decision to pack it in. I probably would have done the same thing.
I’m sure the libs will rejoice over this. 2300 people no longer being subsidized by the taxpayers.
I doubt it.
Costco has no stores closer than 100+ miles to us, while there is a Sam’s 45 miles away in a town of 50K, with 2 universities and 2 major regional medical centers.
We investigated Costco, to see if the trip would be worth it. Their lowest membership fee is higher than Sam’s. The tiered membership isn’t cost effective combined with the trip.
Anyone can get a one-day pass to shop Sam’s without a membership. Costco requires a member sponsor.
The level of inventory is higher than Sam’s. More higher quality stuff at higher prices.
I don’t think they serve the same demographic.
They are closing two Target Stores in my area. But they are opening a Costco.
I think Walmart is adjusting employees to best business practices as Costco has. Costco has less employees but sales are $814 per sf. Walmart has more employees but $516 per sf.
The argument is whether fewer employees making higher wages who are more content leads to increased sales Or is it simply the math.
Walmart never has enough cashiers. They could have 200 people waiting to check out, and have 3 lanes open.
Yes...the real reason for Sams cuts...Costco has more than half of the warehouse club market...and do so paying employees more than WalMart/Sams Club employees. Sams Club doesn’t compete well vs Costco
