A US official downplayed on Thursday a Shin Bet announcement of an uncovered al-Qaida plot to attack the American Embassy in Tel Aviv, calling the cell's plans "aspirational," although the official did not rule out the possibility of danger.
On Wednesday, the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) said it had arrested three Palestinian suspects - two from east Jerusalem and one from the West Bank city of Jenin - who were preparing to bomb multiple targets in Israel, including the US mission and the Jerusalem Convention Center.
"The detainee probably said it but I don't think we give a lot of credence to that. We don't have anything to prove it," AFP quoted the unnamed official as saying.
While the United States was taking seriously the allegations, it had not yet confirmed any of the details, according to the official.
"We can't corroborate that; we probably don't," the official was quoted as saying.
"We see it as what we would call an aspirational plot. It does not mean that it is not dangerous, it does not mean that it is not something we and Israel take seriously."
According to the Shin Bet, arrests had been made of Khalil Abu-Sara, Ala Anam and Rubin Abu-Nagma who had allegedly been recruited by al-Qaida operative Ariv Al-Sham in Gaza.
Shin Bet said Abu-Sara and Abu-Nagma planned to provide bomb vests to foreign militants posing as Russian tourists for attacks on the Jerusalem Convention Center and the US Embassy. It said they also planned to kidnap a soldier and attack an Israeli bus in the West Bank.

Sure, the Israelis are lying to us for unknown purposes. Probably to embarrass the President, we all know al Qaida is defeated and exists only in neocons imaginations. Besides, palestinians are peaceful. They're our peace partners. They wouldn't do something link this. Bomb vests, palestinians can't make bomb vests, can they? They were probably framed.
