Pope Francis today described the internet as a "gift from God," hailing its ability to foster dialogue among disparate groups, though he acknowledged that the speed of social media can make it difficult for users to engage in self-reflection. Francis made the comments in a statement released Thursday, for the Catholic Church's World Communications Day.
In the statement, the Argentine-born pope said that "unprecedented advances" in technology and digital media have made it easier to engage with people of different religions, thereby "creating a sense of the unity of the human family." Using the web to communicate with various groups, he added, could help resolve religious, economic, or political differences.

More like Satan’s tool.
I wish he felt the same way about free market capitalism, a force that has lifted up untold millions from the bondage of slavery and poverty.
I thought it was from Al Gore!
A few years ago I thought I might be the last sane person left...
...then I found Free Republic d8^)
The Internet is evil.
The anonymous unregulated internet is the greatest threat to tyranny since the invention of the gun.
If only it were anonymous or unregulated.
"For where God built a church, there the Devil would also build a chapel." - Martin Luther
I guess the Holy Father never heard of DARPA.
The internet has to be tamed.
Funny, I never seem to recall God helping us write any of the code for routers in the early 90’s.
Or sending angels to do it in His stead.
The internet is neither good or bad, it all depends on how it is used. If it is used the right way, it can be a source for good, but if it is used the wrong way, then nothing but bad can be realized.
The good news is that it is, ever slow but certain.
Of course it is, like all science. It is how you wield the tool. A thing isn’t inherently evil. You just need to use it instead of Evil and that’s just not that tough to pull off. If the Internet is evil, then so are guns and we all know it is the wielder of the gun and not the gun itself. We wouldn’t be communicating and sharing if not for the Internet. You think we have RINOs now? It would be 1,000 times worse without the Internet.
Don’t take God’s gifts and cast them aside just because some misuse them.
... he called for Catholics to engage in more inter-religious dialogue, saying that doing so "does not mean renouncing our own ideas and traditions, but the claim that they alone are valid or absolute."
I thought that these statements would attract more attention than Pope Francis' views on the Internet per se.
And one has to do it oneself; if government gets there first, it gets ugly (just look at the last year). In the future, knowing what’s one doing, what requests are really being sent (it’s NOT just that ‘cnn.com’ click you made! There are twelve ad networks roaming around, besides of CNN having code inserted to trigger every time you scroll the page, etc), what’s sliding under the rug, that sort of thing, will become increasingly important.
Ummm..I was under the impression it was a gift from Algore. Who Knew!!???
