SEIU Fights To Force Home Caregivers To Pay Union Dues
Investor's Business Daily ^ | January 23, 2014 | IBD EDITORIALS

Labor Law: The Supreme Court heard oral arguments Tuesday in a case that will determine if a Medicaid recipient caring for her child is a state worker required to turn part of her meager resources over to union bosses.

Illinois resident Pam Harris is a 55-year-old mom earning less than the minimum wage who cares for her son Josh Harris, 25. He has Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome, a muscular degenerative disease, compounded by physical disabilities and mental illness.

Josh and his family qualify for an Illinois home-based support-services program that lets disabled adults live at home. He gets $721 each month from Medicaid to cover the costs of the constant supervision he requires.

To the Service Employees International Union and Illinois' Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, the fact that Josh's mother receives a small government stipend given to home health-care workers makes her a state employee subject to forced unionization.

Under an Illinois law crafted by the incarcerated former Gov. Rod Blagojevich and enforced by his successor Quinn, home caregivers like Harris are designated state employees required to pay dues whether they join the union or not.

In January 2009, Gov. Quinn, who has taken nearly $5 million in campaign contributions from SEIU, signed an executive order stating these home caregivers — even moms and dads — are in fact public employees available to be unionized by the SEIU, which had been granted exclusive representation rights over the state's 20,475 "personal assistants," as they were designated.

If she considered is a state employee, does she get employees benefits, state health care benefits, and a pension and everything else a state employee gets?
It would worth it to pay union benefits and receive those state benefits.

Sometimes I think what a wonderful thing it would be if an organization of a million or two could be formed for the express purpose of joining groups like the SEIU en masse and taking it over. Once in control fundamental changes could be forced. Of course, that would depend upon honest union elections.

Yeah, its been ended here. Now they’re fighting over the $30 million odd dollars the union took for pretending to represent their victims.

The Nazi’s created a system similar to this, called “The German Labor Front.” After they eliminated private unions, all workers were forced to join their version of the SEIU, and pay dues out of their salaries to the Party.

OK, let us in on your brilliance. How does an average single, widowed, mom and dad live, work, and still take care of their son or daughter?

My neighbor has a 30-something mentally disabled son. What does she do? Not work and rely on the benificence of strangers or hope some church will support her? Take her son to work and sue the company to provide the support? She’s a middle income professional, but doesn’t make enough to pay privately for the services needed. Should she push to have him euthanized?

This case is a legitimite use of state funds to help the sick and in need rather than supporting lazy welfare queens and the fake disabled or greedy thug unions.

Waiting for a reasonable solution, what is it?

Follow the money. It’s always about money, even power is just a means to the lucre.

$721 = ~ $1 per hour, per month, for “constant supervision”.

How much in dues does the thuggish SEIU expect to get from that amount?

I’m so happy union leaders are democrats... I would not want them being Republican. Maybe they can steal from the blind for their next trick.

home health-care workers makes her a state employee subject to forced unionization.

Then I assume she’ll be paid at least minimum wage, overtime, holiday pay and receive sick days and paid medical leave etc.

If we were living in a true constitutional republic with true capitalism then yes, they could rely on charity. That is how conservatism works.

Between Liberals, radical Muslims, and the SEIU, this country is headed for complete disaster.

Paying SOMETHING to a family member to care for the disabled person at home has been proven to be MUCH cheaper than having the state put that disabled person into a facility run by the state.

Another example of the upside down world of Illinois.
