"We are broke," confessed former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell's wife Maureen in an email to his staff, and "have an unconscionable amount in credit card debt."
Let's assume for the sake of argument that this is true. Does it exonerate the McDonnells from the very-serous allegations of accepting gifts in return for using the governor's office to dish out special treatment? Of course not. And yet... it might serve as at least a partial explanation as to why someone who seemed to be a rising star in politics would risk throwing it all away.

"Keep it in your pants, stupid."
What does “broke” mean. They’re getting thrown out onto the street?
54 years old, no credit cards, no debt. Long time ago, I learned the maxim, “pay cash or do without”. It has served me well.
I have to assume this guy is a Democrat, since it’s announced NOWHERE in the article.
Wow. My mistake!
Thrift and living within ones means used to be American values.
I have zero sympathy for McConnell. In addition to being an attorney he was a legislator who imposed laws on the average citizen. One of his legislative accomplishments was co sponsoring a law (1994) to abolish parole for those guilty of a felony. He is also a Roman Catholic so he should understand sin in the eyes of God as well as the law.
If he is guilty of crimes, convict him on each account and put him in the general prison population with no chance of parole. The political system is corrupt. It is time to hold politicians fully accountable for violations of the laws they write and impose. Perhaps he should be an example for others.
His salary was 175K plus free mansion. But that wasn’t enough. They wanted the High Life.
Hence, “Kep it in your pants, stupid.”
Yes, it would be nice to see him in jail, and more politicians like him, so they can see first hand how skewed the “justice” system is in favor of those who have enough money to buy their way out.
