Vladimir Putin has insisted he is 'not prejudiced in any way', and that he has some gay friends, amid an outcry against Russia's laws against gay 'propaganda'.
He also made efforts to praise the 'personal achievements' of gay celebrities such as Elton John, whom he called 'extraordinary'.
But the Russian leader also linked gay people to paedophiles, who are covered jointly in the controversial propaganda law, ahead of the Sochi Winter Olympics, which start next month.
Despite reassuring visitors the laws present 'no danger' to them, the Russian leader still suggested there was a need to 'clean up' homosexuality in Russian order to drive up the country's birth rate, and defended the country's right to pass such a law.
In an interview broadcast amid international outrage ahead of the Sochi Winter Olympics, he said: 'Read our law carefully – it’s called "a ban on the propaganda of paedophilia and homosexuality". But this is nothing to do with persecuting invididuals for their sexual orientation.'
'It seems to me that the law we adopted doesn’t harm anybody. What’s more, homosexual people can’t feel inferior here because there is no professional career or social discrimination against them.
'When they achieve great success [they are honoured] – for example Elton John is a extraordinary person, a distinguished musician, and millions of our people sincerely love him, regardless of his sexual orientation.'
In a segment later broadcast on the BBC's Andrew Marr show, the president dodged a question on whether gay people are born or made.
But he did tell Andrew Marr: 'If you want my personal attitude, I would tell you that I don’t care about a person’s sexual orientation.
'I myself know some people who are gay – we are on friendly terms. I am not prejudiced in any way.'

Why not, he's tough on American and allied troops by his arming and support of our enemies. He's tough on reporters and others there and elsewhere who are critical of him politically. There is a list from here to the moon of such reporters who've mysteriously 'vanished' or turned up dead in Russia. Hard to believe that people are so simple minded that a single issue like this actually wins them over to liking a KGB POS like Putin. And there are more than a few on FR that openly love the guy.

Gays are admitting they want to influence children to be gay by opposing Russia’s child protection law.
Lately despite the hard sell, there’s been a strong push-back around the world. Even Africa is getting in on the issue and everyone is openly saying they’re sick of the gay community pushing people around.

When I was a lad Johnny Mathis was a very popular (and very good) singer and granted the average teen knew ‘Gay’ was happy and carefree.
When the ‘boys’ found out Mathis was singing his ‘love songs’ to them - not the girls - most just said “Oh well, still has a good voice”.
But Johnny Mathis didn’t dye his hair purple and flout his ‘boyfriends’ around, guess he figured you play to the audience that REALLY supports you.
Besides he had to convince White America that being Black shouldn’t have been a problem....then the OTHER shoe dropped.
Still popular and still doesn’t really ‘flaunt’ it.

I, too, was willing to overlook Elton’s personal life — long before this child was in the picture. What really did it for me was reading about the concert he did, several years back, as a fund-raiser for a group seeking the lowering of the age of consent in the UK.
My blood really boiled as I read the description of the dancers who were on stage during his performance. He used boys who were of age but who looked underage. They were dressed in uniforms meant to look like Boy Scout uniforms and were performing homo-erotic routines.
Elton John a “distinguished musician”? Who knew?
Check out the pedo-friendly musical “Billy Elliot” that he concocted with Tim Rice. I was taken to see this dreck in London about 10 years ago and was appalled by a “gay” child character. Then a Swan Lake scene featuring a half naked man and a male child. Then a newspaper interview in which Mr. John expressed an interest in taking care of all the male children who were playing Billy. In the immortal words of the homophobic Men on Film: HATED IT!
