Target will drop health insurance for its part-time employees

Target Corp. said Tuesday that it will stop offering health insurance to its part-time employees because new online health exchanges offer workers an opportunity to buy coverage.

The Minneapolis-based retailer will give each worker $500 to help buy health insurance, and has arranged for one-on-one consultations with benefits manager Towers Watson to help with the transition.

The retailer announced the decision through its online site, “A Bullseye View: Behind the Scenes at Target,” in a Q&A with Jodee Kozlak, Target’s executive vice president of human resources.

In the article, Kozlak acknowledged the disruption to workers. But she said the exchanges might offer options that some workers will prefer, and noted that those who qualify for subsidies and tax credits could find insurance that is less expensive than their current plan offered by Target.

Obamacare, Ending Health Insurance for Families As We Know It

Obamacare, the policy enacted by the party that keeps loudly bragging about standing for the “middle class” and “working families”, is spurring companies to ditch health insurance coverage of their employees working spouses.

But wait, there’s more; companies that aren’t making that move are making employees pay more to cover their spouses, and making employees pay the full cost for their children’s health insurance.

Recall this detail the next time some cheerful liberal emphasizes that Obamacare requires insurers to cover children’s health care: “Although the law requires plans to cover children, it allows companies to pass along the full cost of so-called dependent coverage to the employee, James McTiernan, health care consultant with Triad Gallagher said.”

So Obamacare is effectively ending health insurance for families as we know it. Way to go!

another peeve about Target...in the state of Hawaii Target is no longer providing shopping bags.

The law does not allow stores to provide plastic bags as of Jan 17. Target has gone a step further...they don’t time provide even paper bags anymore. Time to boycott.

Just one little problem with that scenario....

Employees are not eligible for the exchange tax subsidies if they are offered insurance by their employer, but refuse it...

So Target thinks they can have their cake and eat it too?

That exemption they have for their executives healthcare insurance plans expires next year.
Do they really think this administration will keep exempting them from Obamacare forever?

Did none of their own lawyers tell them that a mere stroke of the pen will make their tiered benefits for part-time workers illegal?

Tricked again! Idiots.

Target is a very Democrat-friendly corporation. It was originally founded as a unit of Dayton's Department Stores and the Dayton family remains active in the management. One-time Senator and now Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton is the scion of the family.

They are "connected" and well-positioned to operate in an environment of corporate cronyism.

Well it’s Target so there won’t be a lot of vitriol from the left, can you imagine if this was done by Walmart.

According to Betsy McCaughey, the IRS has said the corporations are off the hook for family coverage at all.

Another article said:

“The company will provide a $500 cash payment to employees losing coverage, as well as access to a benefits consultant.”

Not only does this NOT sound like per month, but not even per year: just a one time CASH payment.

There’s no way Target is going to GIVE ALL of it’s part-time employee’s $6,000/year. They’d go broke doing that.

If only we had a government program that forced employers to provide health insurance to all employees. Or even better. A single payer government health insurance program. That’d be just great.

Having looked at ObamaCare programs, I eronously assumed the $500 a month, but yes, you’re right, it looks like a one time payment ONLY for those ALREADY enrolled in health care programs at Target who are part time employees.

And since Target says that participation by part time employees in the employer program is less than 10 percent, they’re not going to be cutting very many of those $500 checks. Figure the lowest priced ObamaCare plans are in the neighborhood of $300-$350 for their average age employees, the taxpayers will be on the hook for a lot of those dollars as well.

The law does not allow stores to provide plastic bags as of Jan 17. Target has gone a step further...they don’t time provide even paper bags anymore. Time to boycott.

Go shop at the store, get to the checkout, have them do the checkout, and when they refuse to bag it, demand an immediate refund. The policy will change in a very short time, and much much more effective than boycotting, as managers see instantly what the company policy is costing them in manhours to restock shelves from abandoned purchases when they won't pony up a little bag.

Get enough doing it, the policy gets changed. I do this whenever I go to the Republic of Pasadena. Someone will tell me that the law says something, and I say - don't care, you want my business, you'll bag those purchases, or you can get a manager over to do the refund right now. Yes, it is a jackass thing to do, but they let this law go into effect, they didn't fight it, and they can deal with the fallout. Total number of times a store has actually refunded my purchase? Zero. Every time, they magically find bags to put my purchase in and away I go. And it never fails that someone behind me pulls the same thing.

From Target's website:
"Target will provide U.S. stores’ part-time team members who are currently enrolled in Target’s health coverage and who are losing access to that coverage a $500 cash payment."

It also says,
"Today, less than 10 percent of our total team member population participates in our part-time plan."

So Target will do OK with this deal.

Obama and the democrats are dicks I hate them.
Sorry for the bad language I just can’t help it they get me so angry. Since Obama has been in office my standard of living is less than stellar. My husband was laid off in November and along with his check went our insurance I guess we will get penalized now. Thanks Obama you jerk.

You didn't.

BTW, it's spelled "Medicaid." Also, in proper English we capitalize the first word in a sentence.

give each worker $500 to help buy health insurance

That should make a dent in the $12,000 deductible they will be paying.

Or not.

But...Will Walmart Health Insurance cover your sex change operation?

If you like your parts, you can keep them.

“because new online health exchanges offer workers an opportunity to buy coverage.”

Brilliant spin; whoever came up with that phrase gets a bonus! Target doesn’t want to deprive them of the benefits of the Affordable Care Act...

Priceless!

Every time, they magically find bags

We'll try that.

Someone will tell me that the law says something

Thing is...the law in HI does not outlaw paper bags, only plastic. Yet Target is not supplying paper bags either.

The checkout girl tried to tell me that paper was outlawed also. It's a lie. Every other store in town is supplying paper.
