Lansing woman shot at in road-rage incident on I-80/94 11 hours ago • Times Staff
GARY | A Lansing woman was shot at in a road-rage incident Sunday on I-80/94, with one bullet hitting the back of her car, Indiana State Police said in a news release.
The 33-year-old woman told police she was on 25th Avenue in Gary driving her Chrysler 300 slowly because of potholes. She said a car behind her was following too closely, so she braked to get the car to back off. The braking apparently angered the other driver.
The woman said the driver got in front of her vehicle as they turned off 25th onto Burr Street before entering Interstate 80/94 westbound.
She told police that shortly after entering the interstate she noticed the other vehicle — a red four-door passenger car with dark tinted windows — pulled alongside her. She said the driver, described as a black male with dreadlocks and wearing a black sock hat, pointed a gun at her and began shooting, according to the news release.
She said the suspect shot four to five times as she drove away.
Investigators said one bullet struck the rear bumper of the woman's car, entering the trunk. The woman was not injured, police said.
Anyone who witnessed the shooting is asked to call Detective Chris Campione at (219) 696-6242.
This is the second road-rage incident involving a shooting on I-80/94 in less than a week. A Valparaiso man was shot and injured heading home from work Wednesday. That shooting happened in the eastbound lanes near the Ripley Street exit in Lake Station. Police said the shooter was described as a middle-aged black man with short hair. He was driving a silver or gray Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck.
There was another road rage shooting on the same roadway four days ago.

Gary...yet another “feral city”. Don’t go near there. Especially, don’t hang on MLK Drive.
I actually hit my brakes one time to get a guy off my bumper. But when I do it, I slam ‘em on for just the briefest instant. The idea is to get my nose to dive and the tail to lift way up so the guy is absolutely certain he’s gonna hit me. The guy almost went ff the road.
Most of the time I just let them pass or get out of their way.
BTW, in the case above, the tailgating was the last part of some ongoing harassment he was doing. If someone starts shooting at me, I don’t pull off. I ram their car.
We are trying to get Gary either moved to Chicago or Detroit.
“City”? Ever been there? There is no city to speak of, unless you count all the boarded up structures! A prime example of a RAT`S nest if there ever was one.
Braking like that IS road rage and an incitement to escalate. Signal. Pull clear. Live long and prosper.
It’s a crazy world out there...I haven’t been able to wear my firearm because of pain issues...I have been wearing stretch pants so the stiffness of jeans don’t make me uncomfortable..I guess I’ll have to find a spot in my wheelchair bag to put it so I have it with me again.
It seems that in almost every big city MLK Drive is where you don’t want to hang, not just Gary. (the armpit of Indiana as its called here)
I don’t do road rage at all anymore. I spent a few years commuting on the 495 Belway in DC. It cures you. Also, I carry concealed. So if a situation starts to evolve, I make sure to be the first to give a wide birth, pull off, let them pass or get away. I don’t want to have to shoot someone because they got upset with my passing them on the right after politely waiting fro them to move out of the left lane.
That area outside of Chicago where Chicago drivers and Indiana drivers have to share the same road is dangerous in all sorts of ways. I avoid it all together.
Naw. In fact, the guy I did it to was more along the lines of the Camry. Except his car was much nicer than the one I was driving at the time. I also noticed the guy in the camry in the video seemed to figure out that there was a dash cam.
I’m seriously thinking of getting one of those. They are just too cheap, now.

He should have just gone on at that point....driving is a social contract. The lady could have driven however she wanted so long as she was not overly impeding traffic with her caution. If she was, she should have pulled over to allow others to pass.
The other guy found a way around her...that should have been the end of it.
In the end, its just courtesy.
I have noticed a lot of people habitually tailgate and just think that is the normal way to drive. I have been a passenger in their car more than once while they just carry on a normal good-natured conversation apparently unaware that they are way too close to the car in front while going 70 mph.
Very few people follow the 2 second rule. (Pick out a shadow or mark on the road ahead and start counting seconds when the rear of the car in front passes it. You should count to 2 just as the front of your car passes the mark.)

Not a good idea there, Sparky. The shooter may have more bullets and can hit you many more times that your car can hit him. Best reconsider you potential response. (Just saying......Your life is worth a lot more than “momentary revenge”
Okay, if it’s your mission to keep madmen from getting their way, go ahead. Brake. When the bullets fly bc you poked a gang member in the nose, consider he might be trying to teach you a lesson.
My daughter’s boyfriend braked while driving her car lesson-teaching. Result: rear-end collision that sent everybody home from driving school in ambulances. Lesson learned, eh?
I repeat. Braking like that IS an act of road rage.
Often it is the only choice. You can be passive and get shot, or you can use your two ton weapon to the best of your ability. My goal is to severely harm or kill the shooter.
When someone starts shooting, the calculus changes.

The Implementation Team therefore developed a model that State legislatures and agencies can use to create or strengthen their own aggressive or reckless driving laws. Most existing reckless driving statutes are difficult to prosecute and carry only minor sanctions. Your first few sentences speak to why I believe Trayvon Martin started the physical altercation with Zimmerman. The one with the gun is not the one that starts a fist fight.
But if I CC, I completely agree. With the one exception, and it was a guy like the guy in the camry, I let ‘em go. Life’s too short.
But, since I moved to central KY from Seattle, It doesn’t happen any more. Go figure.
That said, I drive that stretch of I-80 from Chicago to I-65 several times a year. It’s an, uh, interesting stretch of road due to the wide range of driving styles one encounters.
