Sowell: Fact-Free Liberals

Someone summarized Barack Obama in three words — "educated," "smart" and "ignorant." Unfortunately, those same three words would describe all too many of the people who come out of our most prestigious colleges and universities today.

President Obama seems completely unaware of how many of the policies he is trying to impose have been tried before, in many times and places around the world, and have failed time and again. Economic equality? That was tried in the 19th century, in communities set up by Robert Owen, the man who coined the term "socialism." Those communities all collapsed.

It was tried even earlier, in 18th century Georgia, when that was a British colony. People in Georgia ended up fleeing to other colonies, as many other people would vote with their feet in the 20th century, by fleeing many other societies around the world that were established in the name of economic equality.

But who reads history these days? Moreover, those parts of history that would undermine the vision of the left — which prevails in our education system from elementary school to postgraduate study — are not likely to get much attention.

The net results are bright people, with impressive degrees, who have been told for years how brilliant they are, but who are often ignorant of facts that might cause them to question what they have been indoctrinated with in schools and colleges.

Recently Kirsten Powers repeated on Fox News Channel the discredited claim that women are paid only about three-quarters of what a man is paid for doing the same work.

The Constitution is designed for progress, and it delivers it in spades. So much so that it has been said that Queen Victoria (1819-1901 IIRC) would have been better off to have been a common secretary in America in 2010 than to have been Queen in her own day.

That means that any sensible person would tread cautiously in the field of promising, and actually attempting, to deliver higher standard of living for the typical person than will happen by the initiative of American citizens/society without intervention by self-flattering “elites."

"The good Doctor [or the website] isn't suffering for it."

I don't usually wade into these snits, but I think freerepublicchat has a point.

Here is the real web page. See the ads? Those are revenue for someone (I don't know how Dr. Sowell is compensated).

It seems odd to me that FR has members who hate the use of FR bandwidth to drive traffic to another page, yet FR has customs that begrudge the target web site containing original content a few ad impressions.

(donning N.B.C. suit...)

BTW, BfloGuy, I lived on Grand Island a number of years, moved out around 20 years ago. How's life up that way these days?

See the ads?

That is a good point. I'll stand by my "hits" statement, but advertisers do like clicks.

How's life up that way these days?

Personally, things are good. My family is gradually returning home [I and my siblings all left as youngsters -- three of five now live within 20 miles of each other (we're working on a fourth but he's resistant to leaving Gatlinburg)], Mom is in very good health and will turn 90 in April. My job is going well.

The countryside is as beautiful as ever, Buffalo is still looking for the silver bullet [new football stadium on the waterfront!], and Albany resembles Havana much more than I'm comfortable with.

All in all, if you moved back, you'd find nothing has changed :)

BfloGuy, thanks for the update! I’m glad the place is still nice - beautiful country.

We’ll probably visit friends but I don’t see myself moving back. I’m shopping now for a warmer place to retire. ;-)
