Two years after someone fired 18 bullets into his body, we finally know the reason Gregory McFadden died such a brutal death at the age of 27 in West Baltimore. He turned his back on a guy.
It was disrespect, a malady that inflames the male ego and makes young men do terrible things. Disrespect has been around for centuries, of course, but its consequences have been particularly lethal in the age of the high-powered handgun. Killing someone because he disrespected you is a phenomenon that no amount of police power or community vigilance can seem to stop.
Some interventions Safe Streets in the Leon Faruq days have been effective when beefs between young men became known. But what do you do to stop a killing like McFadden's?
All of the following facts come from testimony in a murder trial last week in Baltimore Circuit Court. The shooting occurred on Tuesday night, Nov. 15, 2011, in Harlem Park.
McFadden was part of a group of young men on the street at 11 p.m. in the 700 block of N. Carrollton Ave., near a beautiful old stone church.
Maybe it's not a good idea to be on Carrollton Avenue at that hour, but until we declare martial law, a citizen is allowed to visit with friends on the sidewalk. That's what McFadden was doing.
The problem developed when a couple of guys approached him on the sidewalk.
McFadden had flirted with the girlfriend a couple of weeks earlier, and now Baker wanted to have a word with him about that on Carrollton Avenue.
McFadden declined the opportunity for conversation and turned his back.
Baker took offense. So did Moore.
They felt they had been disrespected.

I don’t believe this is a new thing; it’s been around for a long time, and in many other cultures. In the hispanic community it’s called machismo.
I hear this utter garbage in my office weekly
“She doesn’t respect my role as father”
She disrespected me
I don’t have a clue what it even means except that he didn’t get his way
Only took them 4 sentences to blame it on the Evil Gun.
They mentioned “1000s of years”... I am sure the Evil Gun is far worse than the beheadings aand burning at the stake and the lion pits that some experienced in the “1000s of years”. (rolleyes)
Blame it on the gun.
In the United States, this is almost exclusively an ethnic thing. For instance, it is found most often in the black and hispanic communities. I’m going on 63, and I’ve lived in quite a few places over my years, and I have never seen “disrespect” play such a key role among whites. Just saying.
I am guessing this man you speak of has testicles? Or have they been lost to his whiney emasculation?
” until we declare martial law . . . “
The left continues to tell us their intentions.
They’re just expressing their african tribal roots and traditions. Tribal animals and nothing more. Africa has been a tribalized crap hole forever; central and south american tribes as well. When you still maintain a stone age tribal/clan mentality this is what you get. Repatriate them all to africa and see if they can survive as real africans. Most won’t.
The choice of the word “until”, instead of “unless”, is unsettling.
It seems like blacks generally have incredibly fragile egos. At least the street thug variety.
Interesting that this writer is saying that this disrespect idea is common among young men, but he’s not willing to discuss the racial angle of this cconcept. The concept of disrespect is a part of ghetto culture.
“It was disrespect, a malady that inflames the male ego and makes young men do terrible things. Disrespect has been around for centuries, of course, but its consequences have been particularly lethal in the age of the high-powered handgun.”
Would they have felt better if the victim had been stabbed rather than shot 19 times. Sheesh! Did the guy ever read Shakespeare about how the Montagues & Capulets would go at it in the streets with rapiers?
Can’t say I’ve really seen the age of the “high-powered handgun” present itself either.
Seriously a “high-powered handgun.”? Where can I get me one of those death-ray handguns that could take down a satellite if your not careful?
What did machismo ever do to deserve being compared with this kind of base slavery to egotism?
There was some kind of respect for family and society tied up with machismo. It knew chivalry. This... it makes even macho look virtuous.
And worrying inordinately about being dissed is ultimately a love starvation problem. It’s viewed not as “what ever is wrong with him?” but “what ever is wrong with me?” And the answer supplied by Satan is... “you didn’t express your dominance well enough, so take care of it by killing him.”
The gospel is the answer. Not saying it’s trivial to sell, but who has a better choice than carpet bombing the regions? Missionaries are needed. To the inner cities.
Age of the high-powered handgun? WTF? Talk about ignorance on display and total credibility killer. Which high-powered handgun would they be referring too? 9mm, .38, .357 mag, .44 mag, .40, .45ACP, .22, .22L, .380, .32..... Which ones are new in this "age"?
In the "olden" days of which I assume the author is thinking, back when there was no gun violence (or maybe in the wild west where cowboys squared off in the dirt streets on a daily basis at high noon), there were guns that were just as lethal as today.
(I know there were not duels in the "wild west" except on very rare occasions.)
