A new study conducted by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health shows that overweight and obese adults who drank diet beverages took in more food calories on average than their counterparts who drank the sugary stuff.
"Although overweight and obese adults who drink diet soda eat a comparable amount of total calories as heavier adults who drink sugary beverages, they consume significantly more calories from solid food at both meals and snacks," lead study author Sara Bleich, associate professor in the Bloomberg School's Department of Health Policy and Management, said in a press release.
Researchers looked at information from the 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which is a population-based survey that looks at the health and nutrition of U.S. adults. They looked particularly at diet beverage consumption, caloric intake and body weight.
Overall, diet soda consumption rates increased 17 percent from 1965 to today. Currently, about 20 percent of U.S. adults drink diet beverages.
Despite the calories they cut by sipping on diet drinks, researchers found adults who drank diet beverages ate more calories from solid food.
"The results of our study suggest that overweight and obese adults looking to lose or maintain their weight -- who have already made the switch from sugary to diet beverages -- may need to look carefully at other components of their solid-food diet, particularly sweet snacks, to potentially identify areas for modification," Bleich said.
The study was published in the American Journal of Public Health on Jan 16.
The researchers believe that the artificial sweeteners may activate more reward centers in the brain. This in turn affects a person's appetite, making the diet drinkers eat more food because they dont think they are getting enough sugar in their bloodstreams.

Diet Soda is like drinking rust (except Diet Sprite). I also never seen anyone become skinny drinking Diet Soda
If Coke was smart, they should create a Coke 800, an eight hundred calorie soda. I bet people buying it would be thin. :)
Stop drinking soda and you will lose weight.
I’m more an iced tea fan myself (I make my own).
Diet soda doesn’t work, because you only see fat people drinking it ;-)
This has been known for a long time. I am 6ft 2in and weigh 178 lb. I eat what I want but avoid artificial sweetners and high fructose corn syrup. I eat real butter not some oily crap. I’m 60 years old and on zero medication, except beer and Kentucky Bourbon. I am physically active but I don’t workout. People I have convinced to follow my lead have immediately lost weight and feel better in general.
I get all my sugar from a bottle of VO.
I don’t buy this “study.”
Twenty years ago, when I an overweight teen who was tired of being picked on for it, the first things I did were cut out sugary drinks and snacks as well as become more physically active. Dropped 40 pounds in three months and I’ve never put them back on by following the same regimen. No regular sodas, no sugar, regular activity.....all better for it.
Now, each has their own body chemistry so mileage may vary but I don’t see how advocating for more calories in one’s diet is a way for them to lose weight. Take in fewer calories, burn more calories, and voila....
Some years back I switched to a modified paleo diet, but I struggled to shed pounds. Then I read something that prompted me to switch from Diet Coke/Diet Dr. Pepper to soft drinks sweetened with Splenda (Diet Rite or Diet RC). Within days I began shedding pounds. Since then I have noticed this same pattern several times. (I inevitably end up drinking aspartame drinks again because they are ubiquitous). I can’t prove it scientifically, but I suspect there is something about aspartame that hinders weight loss, at least for me.
Same here. I went overboard though. I was making two quarts of iced tea at work. Very strong. I read that drinking diet Pepsi would give me kidney stones. After a year of drinking the tea I got a kidney stone. Ten cm long and 6 cm in diameter in my ureter. Two operations later I went back to diet Pepsi after I found out tea is high in oxalates. So is baby spinach. Two of my favorite things to have at work. Sigh.
I still drink tea - never coffee. Only one cup a day now.

I should have said the underlying assumption here is that more calories equal weight gain, but that’s totally wrong, at least for me.
Look at the label...you need a HAZMAT certification to truck Phosphoric Acid.
But all the people in diet soda commercials are young and skinny. You mean commercials lie?
I believe there may well be something to the idea that the 2 different substances affect our appetites for food in different ways as post 13 suggests.
...and I normally gain weight as many in the colder climates do this time of year. Less exercise, home more often, etc.
get a ruler out and think about what you just posted about the size of your kidney stone,
LOL Yeah, okay. It was millimeters. Sheesh!
See that white thing?
