TransCanada will look at rail if Keystone XL rejected

The chief executive of TransCanada said Wednesday if the Obama administration doesn’t approve the controversial Keystone XL pipeline his company will look to the more dangerous alternative of building build rail terminals in Alberta and Oklahoma.

President Barack Obama is expected to decide early this year on Keystone XL, which is under review at the State Department. The long-delayed pipeline would carry oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast.

TransCanada CEO Russ Girling said pipelines are “by far a safer alternative” to oil trains but said if customers want him to build rail terminals he will. He said he’s in discussions with oil and rail companies.

Concerns have been raised about the increasing use of rail to transport oil throughout North America. A number of recent derailments have worried both officials and residents close to rail lines. In July, 47 people were killed in Lac-Megantic, Quebec, when a train with 72 oil tankers derailed and exploded in the small community. On Dec. 30, an oil train derailed and exploded in North Dakota, causing the evacuation of a nearby town but no injuries. Earlier this month, a train carrying oil and gas exploded in New Brunswick, also causing evacuations.

Girling said they’ll consider building a rail terminal in Hardisty, Alberta where the pipeline would have started. He said he will also consider building an import terminal in Cushing, Oklahoma, site of the biggest U.S. oil storage hub. The southern leg of Keystone XL from Cushing to refineries in the Gulf Coast is set to come online next week.

My prediction: Obama will save the world by approving Keystone.

Everyone is groping for reasons that Obama is blocking Keystone. It makes no sense. However, his reasoning becomes crystal clear when you consider the following:

Obama hates conservatives, especially successful conservative capitalist white people. PM Harper is a conservative white person and Canada is a successful capitalist country. I believe there is some personal animus towards Harper from Obama.

Your prediction: “Obama will save the world by approving Keystone.”........

Should read: “Obama will save the world by committing suicide”.

“My prediction: Obama will save the world by approving Keystone.”

I’m not so sure. My guess is he very well may shelve both until after the mid-terms, or reject both. We’ll see.

TRP $43.95 dividend .43 a quarter. If they end up bringing oil here by rail the stock will jump.

The biggest threat to the economy and security of the Unites States is the environmental lobby.

A couple of questions if you know the answers.

Is the Keystone proposed to be above or below ground?

Approximate mileage for pipeline and rail?

But both parties want it to drag out past the next election so they can use it as a fund raising issue until then.

They are not proposing being a rail carrier. They are discussing adding more rail loading points from their pipelines/terminals. Rail companies would move the oil from there.

Below grade like all pipelines not built in permafrost areas.

Approximate mileage for pipeline

The Keystone XL is a proposed 1,179-mile (1,897 km), 36-inch-diameter crude oil pipeline, beginning in Hardisty, Alta., and extending south to Steele City, Neb.

and rail

To where? Once you load on rail most will haul it to markets not served by major pipelines because the oil is worth more in those locations, like NJ refineries. It also cost significantly more to move it this way. It is not a real apples-to-apples comparison.

but the oil isn’t sprouting from the ground at the site of the terminal, they are still going to have to move it from point A to point B in Canada. Should increase traffic and generate more income for the company.

Rail.; To where?

*******

I was assuming Cushing OK based upon the quotes in the article.

....

approve the controversial Keystone XL pipeline his company will look to the more
dangerous alternative of building build rail terminals in Alberta and Oklahoma.
....
.....

From the article:

Looks like no additional line for this proposal.

I don’t know the rail miles to that location. I suspect that point won’t take in the full volume of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline.
