The feedback continues, with a bunch of military veterans and family members asking me how I could defend the callous COLA cuts to military pensions by way of explaining why Congress is trying to undo them. Another reader email:
I strenuously object to being asked to sacrifice any more! I risked my life in two deployments to war zones, sacrificed my health (I'm also a disabled veteran), and jeopardized my relationship with my family for my country. I find Congress' latest demand a kick in the gut. We veterans and retirees have sacrificed enough without having to endure the pain of COLA cuts. Congress must first reduce the COLA for all current federal retirees (including members of Congress) and Social Security recipients and demand additional sacrifices from non-military Americans. Or better yet, I'm sure there are $6 billion that could be saved by closing corporate tax loopholes, cutting farm subsidies to wealthy corporations, etc. There are at least $6 billion in waste in the defense budget alone. The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter will cost at least $400 billion, and it doesn't even work! But military veterans and retirees should be the last group Congress asks for more sacrifice.
If I've heard this much, I can only imagine what Republicans have been getting in their voicemails and inboxes. On The Hugh Hewitt Show yesterday, Paul Ryan was handed the hideous job of defending the cuts against a host who found them morally outrageous.
"Had Mitt and I won that election, this would not be required," said Ryan. "This would not be necessary."
Hewitt wouldn't have it. "This will destroy retention," he said. "It will destroy morale, and it is deeply unfair to the American military which has sacrificed more than anyone else."

Nothing Ryan says means anything to me.
I did not sit out on the vote.
Again you make huge assumptions.
You have zero idea who I voted for because it is none of your damn business - just saying.
Now run along and pester someone who cares what you think.
Obama cant do squat without the GOP letting him. And they are. It’s a lesser evil. Ask the poster boy in the above pic, Bhoner, McColnel and the rest of the idiots like Rubio that PUSH FOR IT!
Be proud of what you believe. I am.
As I recall though didn’t the veterans groups endorse AR Bill over the first Bush?
Let them show their ass to FR again. This time they are the minority. Thank god. Hopefully Freepers will be so sick of this by the time the election comes they will cut glass this election to get rid of every lesser evil in sight.
politics is not about getting into voting for one candidate over another and pointing out that people who sat out may have cost an election is NOT about SIN.
We do not live in a theocracy though we are well on our way to a dictatorship by a communist. Be as self righteous as you want to be, even Reagan was a political realist
I am
I opposed both evils but as so many embrace evil (which you proudly trumpet doing yourself) they candidates opposed to this didn't win.
The evil candidate you voted for was never going to win, because good people will not compromise and many of your fellow socialized medicine travelers and your fellow gay marriage proponents and your fellow homosexuals in the boy scouts shills and your fellow planned parenthood fans might have been willing to settle for Romney and his long established credentials on those issues but too many people like me would not vote for that under any circumstances.
So you are not now and never were in the category of having voted for a candidate that could conceivably have beaten Obama. Which makes your claim devoid of substance.
“Cherry the problem with your statement is there is really no difference between Romney and Ryan and Obama and his dummy VP, all four and their followers have the very same agenda, New World Order socialism.”
There is no problem with Cherry’s statement. You have facilitated actual socialism in this country via Obama and his fascist minions. Romney/Ryan would NEVER have done so, and if you can’t figure that out you are either politically naive or need to get measured for a straight jacket.
It shows.
Their records give lie to that. Especially Mitt’s. Try harder.
Hewitt is Hewitt, but I love him for going after this very important issue that people are glossing over.
His legal instincts tell him there is something very unusual and very bad about this incident.
In any case he is right. And he’ll talk to and learn a lot about vets. And when that happens, they become bound to the cause.
Marky Mark took that Luttrell story and went with it. He was on the production team. In the interview with Tapper he talks about it a little. He’s not sure how to articulate it, but he knows vets are honorable, and that their story is not told well.
What they don’t realize, even vets don’t articulate this: Vets work for the country. They preserve its foundation (the constitution) and it is so simple. Libs don’t get it because they are not simple they are about getting away from the constitution as well as any decent code of behavior and ethics.
Hewitt is on a learning curve.
He was so passionate about Luttrell’s story when his book came out years ago, and he is hooked on the cause.
AR Bill?
AR Bill = Arkansas’ Bill Clinton
Are you kidding?
He was a draft dodger.
NOO!!
just cut the nonsense. you have a political view point. good for you. I have a political view point. They do not match.
I am not your enemy even if you do think I am the lesser evil. I am and always have been a solid conservative (don’t know how long you have been voting but my first vote was for Goldwater). I don’t like incumbents particularly in the congress.
I will remain
“Obama cant do squat without the GOP letting him.”
It’s pointless debating with someone so politically ignorant. The Dems have the Senate, the Presidential veto, and a Prez who can issue executive orders at whim. The Prez/Dems also have the MSM on their side, and most of the Courts. And you say the GOP could stop them? I suggest you try living in another country for a while. You need an attitude adjustment.
He was a draft dodger.

So was Willard...
but veterans still endorsed him
His place was being a ringer. Same as McCain. Stopping a Conservative from opposing the uniparty cabal in the Republican primary.
