My colleague Ed Morrissey flagged this story earlier today, and as he noted at the time, the full quote is way worse than his headline let on: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reids proclamation in 2007 that the Iraq War was lost, Gates told the crew at Morning Joe, was one of the most disgraceful things Ive ever heard a politician say. And this is a guy whos been around politicians practically his entire professional career.
Obviously the sense of revulsion I felt when he accused Scott Brown of being too scared to debate Elizabeth Warren -- and Mitt Romney of not paying his taxes in ten years without offering proof-- was quite high. But declaring a war lost when it wasnt -- an insult to every American veteran serving (and who had served) in that theatre of war -- has got to be one of the stupidest and most callous things hes ever said in his life (via WFB):

Reid voted in favor of the Iraq War Resolution only to later declare the conflict prematurely lost. He was wrong. Small wonder, then, Robert Gates found the comment so disgraceful.
Seems he’s not saying anything about Afghanistan ... wonder why?
Reid is disgraceful.
DUH.....No freaking kidding, glad you told me or I would never thought of that myself.
I actually met Reid in around 2002 in Laughlin NV when I was a reporter. I can tell you that not only is he disgusting in person, he has the handshake of a cold weak fish.
Which I suppose, would surprise no one.
Gates is disgraceful He praises Hillary in this stupid book of understatements
Everyone of these people should do and should have done what Cruz did. Losing battle or not
Reid seems to have these periods of nastiness around the times when there is nobody willing to change his soiled diaper.
Despicable little man who seems to have no joy in his life or creditability.
I'm no HairyReid fan, and I'd agree he is dispicable... and certainly little. But he is MOST definitely NOT... ummm... uhh... what was that third thing you called Reid?
“..Harry Reid is a nasty, despicable, partisan liar. As nasty as they come.”
He has many mentors.
Does anyone in DC think it's disgraceful that the Sen. Majority Leader is a mob-connected criminal?
Yes he is. Every bit as nasty as the lying liars that lied us into Iraq and made a bad situation vastly worse. In removing the lid from and radicalizing islam in Iraq, that war was lost from day 1.
Well, Will Rogers pointed out that we get the best Congress money can buy.
True in Will's day; true today.
