The elderly man accused of shooting a movie theater patron in Florida after an argument over text messaging told police that he fired because he "was in fear of being attacked."

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said at a news conference today that the victim, Chad Oulson, 43, was texting his young daughter's babysitter when an argument erupted with Reeves over texting during previews before the movie "Lone Survivor."

Apparently he became dangerously nuts after retiring?

In his statement he said he pulled it out of his pants pocket.

He said nothing about a holster.

Setting aside the guy’s previous job, the younger, more powerful thug clearly threatened it after he assaulted the guy with popcorn. The question is: whether or not the older guy truly felt he was in danger. Shoot those who threaten or assault you, only then you will have polite and respectful society.

I actually I never said that reeves politely asked Oulson to stop texting.

I haven’t seen one post that tries justify homicide for annoying texting.

I would get after you for reading comprehension, then; but I'm too tired of this thread by now. 'Nite!

one of these might help get a firmer grip. (I haven't tried one.) Sometimes, just getting one more finger in there helps. Have you tried different ammo? Or are you just getting failure to eject/failure to feed problems?

How do you know the people behind you aren't distracted by the glow of your smart phone screen?

1. I don't have a smart phone. The 'screen' on my phone is about one inch wide and long.

2. I have a cell phone, but I have yet to text with it.

Ergo... maybe my lack of equipment, lack of being in a movie theater in the past few years, and unwillingness to text disqualify my opinion about this incident.

Sounds like you have a flip phone like mine. I do text occasionally but it doesn’t light up and it doesn’t click.

We were in a movie theater a few years ago and a phone rang several rows behind us. Several rows in front of us a really big guy stood up and looked our way.

He sat down and the phone rang again. Then big guy climbed over his seat into the row in front of us.

I was afraid he thought our phone was the one that rang and he was going to attack us. His wife pulled him back and he sat down.

That was much too much anger over 2 rings of a cell phone..... if he had had a gun.............

I lost track of what was going on in the movie and it was not because of the ringing phone it was because of the over reaction of a lunatic.

My parents have nothing to do with this, so let’s get back to the topic.

This much bigger thug (he looks at least 6’5”) was using cell phone in the theater and threw popcorn at the elderly man. The elderly man, after being assaulted by popcorn, felt the need to defend himself(and his wife, most likely).

We can certainly analyze this and question the circumstances; I am willing to change my opinion if I turn out to be wrong in gathering facts.

Regardless, what is clear is that the younger and bigger man brought popcorn to the gun fight, just like St. Travon brought his skittles to the gun fight. Thankfully thuggish behavior can be neutralized.

“Did you used to post under the screen name of Alaska Wolf?”

Unless I have severe bipolarism or some other mental disorder causing me to do things, I do not recall posting using any other handle since 2003.

Being a rude, self absorbed bastard isn't illegal and it isn't a capitol offense.

An armed society is a polite society.

Notice that it says 'polite society' not 'legal society'.

As a society, now that this guy has been killed, I'd say we are a little more polite.

In my many years, I've run into a lot of jerks like the guy who was killed. I normally do as the fisherman upthread did, just move out of their way.

I'm not at all unhappy this guy is dead, and if it weren't a retired cop who shot him I'd be even happier.

My guess is that the fact the shooter was assulted before the shooting will play a pivotal role in the trial.
