An armed society is a polite society.
Notice that it says 'polite society' not 'legal society'.
As a society, now that this guy has been killed, I'd say we are a little more polite.
In my many years, I've run into a lot of jerks like the guy who was killed. I normally do as the fisherman upthread did, just move out of their way.
I'm not at all unhappy this guy is dead, and if it weren't a retired cop who shot him I'd be even happier.
My guess is that the fact the shooter was assulted before the shooting will play a pivotal role in the trial.

True. Next time when somebody tries to be rude, assuming they have heard of this story, they surely will think twice that their rudeness can escalate into their own death.
The gun equalizes.
Because being rude is a capitol offense? What makes you think that the shooter wasn't as big a jerk about the whole situation? And that the whole thing spun out of control because if his being a bigger jerk than the texter? Is the armed jerk always the right one?

My expectation is that because there is no evidence whatsoever that the shooter was in imminent danger of great bodily harm, he will be convicted of second degree murder and will spend the rest of his life in an environment where people won't put up with his bullying and his bluster.
