Little Sisters of the Poor stand firm against mandate
Catholic Review ^ | 1/13/14 | George P. Matysek Jr.

The phone rang at the Catonsville headquarters of the Little Sisters of the Poor just moments after a Dec. 31 televised news program reported on Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s order to temporarily prevent the Little Sisters of the Poor from being required to comply with the Affordable Care Act’s contraceptive mandate.

A 12-year-old girl from Colorado had been watching the breaking news with her parents and wanted to call the Little Sisters to support their lawsuit against the federal government.

The sisters object to having to provide contraceptives, sterilizations and abortifacient drugs within their employee health insurance coverage under what is popularly known as “Obamacare.”

“The girl wanted us to know that she and her family were Catholic and were 100 percent behind us and that they were praying for us,” remembered Sister Lawrence Pocock, a Little Sister of the Poor who ministers at St. Martin’s Home for the Aged in Catonsville. “She said she wanted to be a nun when she grows up. It was so touching.”

The telephone call was but one in an avalanche of calls, letters and requests for interviews the Little Sisters have received from all over the country in recent weeks.

The Baltimore and Denver provinces of the Little Sisters of the Poor and their co-plaintiffs, Christian Brothers Services and Christian Brothers Employee Benefits Trust, filed the suit and are represented by the Washington-based Becket Fund for Religious Liberty and others.

For a religious community happy to stay out of the spotlight and minister to low-income seniors in unsung ways, the intense media attention – both positive and negative – has been overwhelming. It’s not preventing them from continuing their ministry, however, and it will not change their determination to defeat what they see as an unjust provision in the law.

Enemies of the state.

As Melissa Harris Perry says, the collective good comes before freedom, except for abortion or sodomy of course, those are unalterable freedoms.

You know what's going to happen. They'll drop the mandate and issue "rewards" for Planned Parenthood. Then they'll increase PP funding by 1000%. That was the plan all along.

Then.....They'll put a PP office in every school in the nation so no one is inconvenienced by a baby.....like their mother was.

This is starting to remind me of the sixteen Carmelite nuns ranging in age from 29 to 78 during the French Revolution who were brought to the guillotine together, singing hymns as they were led to the scaffold. They were beatified in 1906. All they had to do was renounce God and they were free to go home. All the Little Sisters of The Poor have to do is sign the paper making someone else responsible for funding the abortions in their name. That’s all. Someone like Hussein can’t understand. After all religion is just something people talk about in church on Sunday.

Keep fighting, sisters. What can they do? Audit you?

(For the KBG agents at the IRS, nuns take a vow of poverty)

With all due respect to the Little Sisters of the Poor, please consider the following. Just like Mr. Green of Hobby Lobby, the Sisters are an example of citizens who are suffering the tyranny of unconstitutionally big federal government as a consequence of their evident lack of knowledge of the federal government's constitutonally limited powers.

More specifically, all that the Little Sisters need to argue against Obamacare is the following. They need to argue that the activist justices who gave the green light to unconstitutional Obamacare wrongy ignored that the Supreme Court had previously officially clarified that the states have never delegated to Congress, via the Constitution, the specific power to regulate public healthcare, Congress prohibited from laying taxes in the name of such things.

”State inspection laws, health laws, and laws for regulating the internal commerce of a State, and those which respect turnpike roads, ferries, &c. are not within the power granted to Congress. (emphases added)” —Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.

“Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States.” —Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.

Also, I question if the respective attorneys representing Mr. Green and the Little Sisters are aware of the Court's clarification that Congress has no constitutional authority to regulate, tax and spend for public healthcare purposes. After all, conservative law school students get the same anti-constitutional indoctrination in law school that liberal students do.

In Riyadh we used to call it Saudi Sunday...but then nothing remains the same in that part of the world so in June they changed the weekend. From BBC this:

Saudi Arabia switches start of weekend from Thursday to Friday. A royal decree takes effect June 2013.

After Oman switched to a Friday-Saturday weekend, Saudi Arabia was the only country left among the six-member Gulf Co-operation Council to persist with the old format.

A statement carried by the the national Saudi news agency SPA said the change, decreed by King Abdullah, was “for the sake of putting an end to the negative effects and the lost economic opportunities consistently associated with variation based on work days between local departments, ministries and institutions and the regional and international counterparts.”

It will mean that Saudi businesses will now have four working days overlapping with Western and regional businesses rather than three, making it easier to trade.

Friday remains a holiday in Muslim countries because it is a holy day set aside for communal prayer.
