According to figures released by HHS, only one quarter of the 2 million Obamacare enrollees who signed up through December are young adults - 18-34. On the other side of the coin, fully one half are 45-64.
The White House says that 25% enrollment of young invincible is enough to prevent the dreaded "death spiral" for the program, where older, sicker enrollees far outnumber the younger healthy ones, thus leading to skyrocketing insurace premiums.
But there are no figures available that show how many enrollees have actually paid their first month's premium, nor is there any breakdown of how many in the 18-34 age group are healthy and how many are sick.
The figures mean that the proportion of young adults is lagging behind what both government and outside health policy analysts have said will be required for the exchanges to remain stable. Analyses have concluded that, to prevent health plans' premiums from rising and some insurers from potentially dropping out, roughly two in five Americans in the plans should be young adults.
In releasing the report, Obama administration officials were upbeat. The latest enrollment figures are "solid, solid news for us," a senior administration official told reporters at a White House briefing. The officials predicted that the health plans would attract more young adults during the second half of the open-enrollment period for this year, which continues through March.

And two weeks in already a bailout planned...
About the only thing these people have heard for most of their adult lives is the promise of "free, universal health care".
What's this crap? You mean I gotta pay for it?
I think the bailout was pre-planned. It was built into the legislation.
“The officials predicted that the health plans would attract more young adults during the second half of the open-enrollment period...”
How? Using a superior advertising campaign like Pajama Boy?
That Laszewski guy was exactly correct. The product they are trying to sell sucks.
They’ll need to bring out the “stick” sooner, that’s all.
Most certainly, but this soon?
Liars figure and figures lie.
Single payer is coming. The Dems will patch, twist and modify obamacare as they see fit, in order to keep obamacare functioning, barely. Obamacare will limp along, causing pain throughout the country. The Democrats will use this as an excuse to sell single payer. The public will accept anything in hopes of mitigating the pain of obamacare.
True, but I think it’s failing (or succeeding) even much faster than they planned.
Shot themselves in both feet and in the arse with that “you can stay on Dad’s plan till your’re 26” business, eh?
If the House Republicans were smart they would pass a resolution right now saying under no circumstances will the house bailout Health Insurance companies and if Health Insurance Companies are afraid of the mix of customers they are getting they should bail out now. Obamacare would collapse once the insurance companies realize they are on the hook for this poorly conceived plan.
And how many of these 18-34 year old “enrollees” have PAID
I am betting close to 100% signed up, looked at the costs, and said “forget this!’
The Chicago Way will be used to get ‘em enrolled... they’ll be bullies and threatened. Is this a great country or what? /s
Single Payer? I have heard of this. They say it is like Medicare where everyone will pay 103 dollars a month for health care. How are people on welfare going to pay? Can they take it out of their welfare check?
I find it hard to believe that the people who designed this plan are so stupid. Even young Obama cultists will not sign up. If it come to signing up or getting that gold tooth you always wanted, the gold tooth wins or the $500 tennis shoes.
The older participants who signed up for Obamacare were probably those who were forced out of state CHIP programs. Those who need medical coverage to survive had to sign up.
