People signing up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Acts federal and state marketplaces tend to be older and potentially less healthy, officials said Monday, a demographic mix that could cause premiums to rise in the future if the pattern persists.
But officials expressed optimism that more young people will sign up in the months ahead, calling it solid, solid news for the health care law. They said demand for insurance through the marketplaces was increasing sharply across all age groups and they said youth outreach will become more aggressive in the months ahead.
Were pleased to see such a strong response and heavy demand, said Kathleen Sebelius, the secretary of health and human services. Among young adults, the momentum was particularly strong.
Officials for the first time released basic demographic information about the people signing up for insurance. Of those who signed up in the first three months, 55 percent are age 45 to 64, officials said. Only 24 percent of those choosing a health insurance plan are 18 to 34, a group that is usually healthier and needs fewer costly medical services. People 55 to 64 just below the age at which people qualify for Medicare -- represented the largest group, at 33 percent.

Cant Øbama just let millions of immigrants into the country and pay taxes to offset the older versus younger citizens ?
The reason it isn't 100%, is that some states require everybody to go through the exchange if they do not have employer coverage.
Signing up does not mean PAID. This administration is the most fraudulent in history, and the idiots in the media let them get away with the fraud.
“Signing up does not mean PAID”
-Only white heterosexual men are required to pay
no. they’ll just pay the penalties and move on. less expensive that way. how did the supreme court every find this racket to be a tax anyhow?
Lots of new Expanded Medicaid enrollees, true, but their funding source is entirely separate from the exchange policies (much of the funding is coming from cuts to Medicare Advantage and other programs). So, in other words, people buying policies on the exchanges are not the same people paying to subsidize the E.M. enrollees.
Well, it’s not like anybody could have predicted that.
It also doesn't meant COVERED. It just means you're on a database.
These reports are from the Old Gray Hag therefore it is propaganda in its purest form.
Right now there is no way to collect the penalties except by taking them from tax refunds. And there are no criminal charges for not paying the penalties.
I had to check to see if this was satire. Sadly, it’s not.
Repeat after me, stupid liberals. Access does not mean health care. Access does not mean health care. Access does not mean health care. Access does not mean health care. The communists promised access to free health care and jobs for every man — and wound up delivering nothing at all.
Access is a lie and falsehood.
Besides Pajama Boy, I’m not aware of young adults lining up en mass to send $300/month on a plan with over $6K in deductibles and double that deductible for out of network care.
The penalties are low....for the first couple of years.
After that, the fine becomes CRUSHING.
Yes, FR was talking about this while the law was still being debated.
