When heavily armed marines and government tax agents stormed eight marinas on Mexico's Pacific and Caribbean coasts, boaters thought they were witnessing a major drug takedown.
The mostly American and Canadian retirees found out that the target was actually them couples spending their golden years sailing warm-weather ports in modest 40-foot boats.
After inspecting more than 1,600 vessels in late November, the Mexican government's Treasury Department announced it had initiated seizure orders against 338 boats it accused of lacking a $70 permit. The office says it has four months to decide whether to release the boats or sell them at auction.
Many owners say they actually have the permit but were never asked to present it. Others say minor numerical errors in paperwork were used as grounds for seizure.

Government ordered theft. The Mexicans are learning from us!
Don’t get holder and the us involved if you have a boat seized. The gummint will back the mex’s
Mexico’s almost as corrupt as The Peoples’ Republik of Merryland is:
* Flush tax,
* Rain tax,
* Car idling to warm-up ticket & license points,
* etc...
“Government ordered theft. The Mexicans are learning from us!”
The Mexicans are the experts. We are learning from them.
Ping.
I guess people should spend their golden years sailing to warm weather places everywhere but Mexico. Make that anywhere pirates don’t lurk, even pirates working for the government.
Mexicos almost as corrupt as The Peoples Republik of Merryland is:

But not near as bad as the US Gov.
It’s actions like this one that makes a person really consider whether or not a boat/ship trying to outrun SHTF is really all that practical.
Sounds like he's unfamiliar with the story of the goose that laid golden eggs.
Someone with poor enough judgment to want to live in coastal Mexico probably needs a competency hearing and accommodations in a secure nursing home.
People talk about how great it is to retire in Mexico (cheap, everyone leaves you alone. . .) but stories like this make me VERY DISINTERESTED.
I don’t even want to tourist there. I might do a medical vacation if necessary, with a reputable company.
Perhaps they could get their boats back if they trade them for some weapons..
Hey, it Worked for Holder.
Obama may have given the Messycans the thumbs up on this one. It does have the ring of one of Barky’s half-baked ideas about profit sharing and wealth redistribution all rolled up into one nice little spiteful hatin’-on-the-crackers package.
We don’t need no steenking permits ... oh. wait ...
Nice boat joo got dere, gringo. Be a chame...
Maybe the US could work out some sort of hostage exchange progam...you know, the 20 million Mexicans held hostage by the FedGov...fair trade...
Among the dozens...and dozens....and dozens...of reasons why I’ve never set foot in Mexico and never will is because *every* policeman,*every* lawyer,*every* judge,*every* prison guard,*every* government official and *every* politician in the country is utterly corrupt.
I don’t care how cold it gets north of the Rio Grande, I’ll never set foot in that hell-hole called Mexico.
