Plane crashes, woman dies, survivor films and takes selfie
CNET ^ | 10 January 2014 | Chris Matyszczyk

A month after a small plane crash in Hawaii, a surviving passenger shows GoPro footage and even a selfie taken during the ordeal.

Would you have done the same? Ferdinand Puentes was one of nine passengers in a 2002 Cessna Grand Caravan which suddenly suffered engine failure off Kalaupapa, Molokai in Hawaii last month. As he heard the engine fail and saw the plane heading for the water, one of his first instincts was to turn on his GoPro camera and film what might have been his own demise. As KHON-TV reports, Puentes knew the danger he was in, yet the decision to film as much as possible might perplex a few. He managed to get out of the plane alive and survived the crash. However, while he was floating on a seat cushion and wearing his life raft, he took a selfie.
Was the impulse to record just a natural reaction? After all, any bystander or news organization would have likely done the same thing. And these days everyone is using their phones to film just about everything they see. But wouldn't one's first instinct be to try to contact family and friends to say goodbye? Perhaps that did happen. The footage reflects a quite stunning lack of panic. The passengers behave in an orderly manner. There is no screaming or pushing. No one seems frantic at all. Loretta Fuddy, Hawaii's 65-year-old state director of health, died in the crash, despite managing to leave the plane. In watching Puentes talk to KHON-TV, though, it's evident that the footage brings back painful memories. Would everyone want to have such ready access to a reminder? Or would some prefer to forget? "You could have died," Puentes told KHON-TV. "There's so much variations that could have happened for the worse."

That is a strange reaction. One would think he would have attempted to do more for her.

Aren’t we supposed to be our brother’s keeper?
A good Samaritan?

The person that’s holding your hand let’s go... AND??? Then what? You notice a seagull is flying over head? You notice the sky is blue? You notice that you are getting an itch under your nostrils? Do you notice A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G else? ANYTHING!!!

The more I think about it, at the very least- the word negligence keeps popping up.

Occam’s razor. Sometimes the most obvious and simplest answer IS the answer.

Re photo in post # 45:

Looks like that could be Fuddy, third from the right, hanging on to a part of the plane. Notice that, in contrast to the other people pictured, she is not holding nor wearing a floatation vest.

Note also the man whose entire upper body is visible, second from the right, holding a yellow floatation vest. Is that Yamamoto?

And what is that black and brown object on the left?

What strikes me from reading Yamamoto’s [sp?] acct is that he seems certain from the moment Fuddy’s grip relaxes that she’s dead. How cd he possibly have known she hadn’t simply fainted? If she *had* fainted, that wd be all the more reason for him to hold on more tightly, not just let go & allow her to drift away.

"The whole purpose of this story appears to be to perpetuate that falsehood. - She didn't die in the crash. - She got out alive (as did the pilot and other passengers) and her life terminated afterward."

Precisely. What position. Or action did he take while she was holding his hand ?

Doesn’t float my boat. Speaking of boats.....

That brown - black thing to the left looks like a boat. Besides jackets are planes that fly over water also required to have inflatable boats? Why not?

The black object you mentioned does look like a raft. Why no mention of a raft in any of the accts?

Also, if Fuddy is wearing a life jacket, why is no trace of it visible? One poster said she’s the only one *not* wearing a life preserver. It certainly looks that way, but this contradicts all the accts.

This pic raises more questions than it answers, & that is an understatement.

That woman isn’t wearing the right clothes. Look at her picture at http://www.khon2.com/news/photo-shows-fuddys-last-moments-on-molokai She’s got a medium-dark purple shirt with collar and a long-sleeved purple-flowered jacket over the top.

I’ve cropped the photo to look at the 2 people closer to the body of the plane, and I think those are Fuddy and Yamamoto.

This other gal is a mystery. The one in the white shirt with gray stripes is Rosa Key. The only other woman besides Fuddy was a 74-year-old woman who was in bad shape when PJ Ornot found her, and I presume that the photo of the woman being treated for hypothermia is her - a small, dark-skinned woman.

Sounds like you have the same questions I have in #98. And how long does it take for an autopsy report to be completed?

So what do you believe was happening at 4:30? Do you believe Josh Lang, who says that the navy plane arrived at 4:30 - after which the Coast Guard plane and then helicopters arrived to begin the rescue operation? Do you believe that in 10 minutes they did all the rescue stuff, retrieved Fuddy, performed at least 10 minutes of CPR on her, got a doctor to declare her dead, and then reported the fatality to news media in time for a 4:40 media report of one casualty?

Or do you believe Mark Miller’s report that at 4:30 all the victims were rescued and accounted for, and Puentes and Fuddy were being worked on in the Coast Guard helicopter, with Puentes being fine and Fuddy not being able to be revived? And the Coast Guard taking 2 more hours after that to get anybody to Honolulu, to the Makani Kai headquarters at the Honolulu Airport to be picked up by the Honolulu EMS?

You're right, she's near the door and she's wearing a lifejacket. Her hair is still dry!

That black thing on the left is one of the seat cusions the pilot threw out as floatation devices.

Why are all the faces distorted /blurred in that pic?

It appears they are wearing masks attached to the life vests. I suppose the masks allow for inflation via exhilation. If you look at the guy sitting on the wing, there appears to be a tube between the mask and vest. Note that the persons on the right have uninflated vests. Maybe they are attempting to inflate their vests.

Saw this same clip on our local ABC affiliate tonight as well as on FR. On local TV they actually said that Fuddy died at the hospital. Stories keep changing.

These are the people we’ve been told were in the plane:
Kawasaki, the 60-some-year-old pilot, in white shirt and buzz cut

Phillip Hollstein, a white-haired 70-year-old guy who swam to shore.

Yamamoto, Fuddy’s deputy director who was wearing shorts and has a goattee

A 70-ish-year-old man who was fine and glad to see rescue swimmer Mark Peer. The Coast Guard said they transported 3 to Honolulu - one straight to a hospital and 2 to the Honolulu Airport where they were picked up by EMS. The 3rd person they transported just about has to be this guy. The 73-year-old woman was probably his wife.

Ferdinand Puentes, a 34-year-old construction worker who had a cut and bump on his head and was taken to Honolulu on the Coast Guard “plane” - presumably the larger, military-transport plane, as opposed to the smaller helicopters)

Jacob Key, husband to Rosa Key, an administrator for the National Park in Kalaupapa.

Rosa Key, wearing a white shirt with gray stripes and a ponytail. Jocob and Rosa were both taken to Molokai.

A 73-year-old woman who barely looked up at CG rescuer pj ornot and was transported to Honolulu in the Coast Guard plane (I presume she is the one pictured being treated for hypothermia. )

Loretta Fuddy, wearing a purple shirt with collar and a purple flowery jacket.

I presume that the 2 who refused medical treatment were Kawasaki and Yamamoto, who instead were flown in a Makani Kai plane to Honolulu, where Yamamoto was driven to his home and didn’t show up to work at least the next day, and Kawasaki (or his son, depending on which story you believe) drove him to the hospital for stitches and a concussion that required 2 days in the hospital and no flying until he was medically cleared.

There were only 3 women, and that gal in post 45 doesn’t fit the description for any of them.

I think the black things are seat cushions that Kawasaki threw out of the plane.
