The Chicago Teachers Union is demanding that CPS close all schools due to the extreme cold that is forecast for Monday.
Right now, CPS and the City of Chicagos Office of Emergency Management are sending confusing and mixed messages to the public about what to do, said CTU President Karen GJ Lewis in a press release. We believe common sense would dictate that CPS should close schools with at least 10 inches of snow already on the ground and a record-breaking low temperature of -10 degrees forecast for Monday.
...
Schools throughout the Chicago area have announced school closings for Monday, including Northwestern, DePaul and the University of Chicago. CTU says CPS should close Monday too.
We expect nothing less when it comes to paying attention to the well-being of the children and teachers we serve, Lewis said. In light of the forecast, sending children to school in such dangerous weather conditions shouldnt even be an option for parents.

Is it supposed to get warmer Tuesday in Chicago ?
What the point then...wooly up and get ta skol chillins !
The schools should be closed. It would be ridiculous to send small children out (or even older children) with what we are facing here in Chicagoland, weather-wise on Monday. You won’t catch me going out, as I am older and not an idiot.
I live in Richmond, VA. Just the threat of snow closes the schools! Then, everybody buys bread and milk. (only a small exaggeration)
I guess asking politely is out of the question for a union?
bttt
Funny,
I’d like Chicago schools closed - permanently - because the teachers are IN that foul union.
One of modern life's funniest rituals ! d:^)
We're talking a lot of kids from "deprived" neighborhoods, where people don't have an ounce of common sense and need the government to come along and wipe their noses for them.
Its probably best to not have classes.
But should still have schools open, in case some don't get the word, or need a warm place to go.
We just received an e-mail and a telephone call from the Naperville School District (203) that the District 203 schools would be closed on Monday, January 7, 2013. But then, it gets colder out here than by the lake.
I suspect the schools would be closing anyway. The union is just grabbing a headline.
In the Lehigh Valley (PA), they’d sometimes close schools because of extreme cold and snow and the ski resorts nearby would be standing room only. What a joke!
You are correct.
We must remember the DEMOcratic DEMOgraphic of Chicago.
404,000 kids....with mostly idiots for parents.
Bunch of wimps, when I went to grade school in Arlington
Heights we walked all the time, sometimes the snow
would be piled up on either side of the side walk to
where it looked like walking down a white hall way.
I remember having our Halloween parade around the play
ground in snow 3” deep.
Course things were different in “those” days.
Why not? Kids will miss nothing worthwhile. Only BS is on the current agenda.
Then, everybody buys bread and milk.

Before cell phone cameras, a sign at the women’s restroom entrance at our Wal-Mart read “Closed due to plumming.” Thank God watermelons weren’t in season.
It’s okay for the commie ‘RATS to demand a “shutdown”. Let the Republicans try it and their *** is grass.
