There’s a reason the text version of Camille Paglia’s opening statement at the Munk Debate, “Resolved: Men Are Obsolete” garnered 10K likes on Facebook and received more than one thousand comments at Time.com: it hit a nerve.
It was a nerve that needed to be hit, and Paglia did it beautifully.
Not only was her choice of words fitting, she delivered them with the perfect amount of exasperation.
America must revisit its distorted view of gender equality, implored Paglia, and start being fair to the other half of the human race.
Men’s success in fields such as medicine, engineering and technology have done more to liberate women from the constraints of their former lives than a busload of feminists could ever hope to do.
It’s time to stop pretending men are oppressors and to start recognizing the extraordinary contributions men have made to society.
Paglia says, “History must be seen clearly and fairly: obstructive traditions arose not from men’s hatred or enslavement of women but from the natural division of labor that had developed over thousands of years during the agrarian period and that once immensely benefited and protected women, permitting them to remain at the hearth to care for helpless infants and children. Over the past century, it was laborsaving appliances, invented by men and spread by capitalism, that liberated women from daily drudgery.”

Quite a few of the inventions of women you listed are laughable. Elevated railway- who invented railways to be elevated? Engine muffler - who invented the engine it went on? Globes - who sailed around and discovered the earth needed a globe shape? Locomotive chimney - like claiming a great victory for designing the door handle on the Saturn V rocket. Submarine lamp and telescope - useless without a submarine.
It would seem hat the invention of the circular saw is disputed - it appears on both lists.
Okay - you guys saved the world. Now you’re satisfied.

This is one of those stories that is useless to respond to if one is a woman.
By far the most important factor in extension of the human life span has been the separation of the human waste stream from our water supply.
The reduction started a number of decades before the germ theory of disease proved why this separation was important.
Plumbers have saved a LOT more lives than doctors ever have.

The main important invention/discovery by women of course is the cursed HEADACHE.
Until quite recently in history few women got a chance to compete fully in society. OTOH, that competition for this entire period was rough enough that women of the time (and today, for that matter, if faced with the choice) were happy to be sheltered from.
In the final scene of Taming of the Shrew Kate describes how women are sheltered by men from the harshness of the world. This is used by feminists of today as an example of "false conciousness."
The problem with this is that at the time it was also largely TRUE.

The world has changed, and this, in advanced societies, is no longer really true. Women are able to compete on the level with men, and in some ways have significant advantages.
But their ability to do so is largely the consequence of advanced technology, which was almost, though not entirely, created by male efforts.
The only thing Paglia did was get more women, especially feminists fired up. It’s divisive.
Women and feminists will read this and say, “Ah-ha! We told you what men really think of women, didn’t we? They think they are superior. They are exactly, who we thought they were! Paglia is laying it all out. Grass huts!”
Feminists are not going to back down or make any concessions just because Paglia writes an article. It was a lovely “airing of grievances” and maybe she can buy herself a Festivus pole. There are millions more like it, all over the internet. Feminists have a lot of grievances as well.
