Experts have warned that Friday's freezing temperatures were simply a warm-up and that this weekend will bring a big chill for 140 million people - almost half the nation - that could prove fatal for the unprepared - and will continue through the winter.
With the Northeast still reeling from the huge storm that dumped as much as two-feet of snow across the region and was responsible for the deaths of 16 people, a new weather system is threatening to bring record low temperatures to the Midwest as a polar vortex barrels over the United States.
'It's the mother lode of cold air,' said Weather Channel coordinating meteorologist Tom Moore. 'On the heels of what will be the coldest air of the season, will be dangerous, life-threatening winds.'
Because of the winds, 'It may feel as cold as negative 50 to negative 60 on Sunday night over sections of the north-central states,' the National Weather Service said to NBC News. 'In those conditions, frost bite sets in on exposed skin within five minutes.'
Moore said that as the freakishly cold weather hits the region, authorities need to act fast to avoid a human catastrophe because of the chill.
'Anybody living out on the streets needs to be rounded up and put into a shelter,' said Moore to MSNBC News.
'The repercussions ... could be deadly, and I'm afraid we're going to see cases like that.'
The temperature predictions are startling: 25 below zero in Fargo, North Dakota, minus 31 in International Falls, Minnesota, and 15 below in Indianapolis and Chicago.
The so-called 'polar vortex' will send cold air piled up at the North Pole down to the U.S., funneling it as far south as the Gulf Coast.

I cannot even remember what it was like to have him on the road in iffy weather when we didn’t have cell phones. I have so much more peace of mind these days.
Not only that, the thumb and first two finger tips are conductive, so you can use a Kindle, cell or touch screen. I love them.
This happened at a power plant in western PA last winter. They had a steam release which created a narrow band of snow downwind on an otherwise clear radar image.
When my wife and I first started our business, cell phones were just coming into vogue. Our first work related communication devices were pagers. She and I had a whole set of numerical codes we set up to send quick messages to each other and our guys in the field.
That worked pretty well, but eventually, she insisted that she have the ability to talk to me directly while I was away on jobs, so, in came the mobile phones. Darn things were expensive though, and I chafed at the bills every month. We did find one model that had the instant talk radio feature.
That saved us a ton of money on minutes. We used those for years until the price of regular cell phones came down to a somewhat reasonable level. Now I’ve got a doggone smart phone, so she send me texts, expects me to check my email, and pick up the phone when she calls.

Well, I just learned that our HIGH is predicted to be 20 for Monday and Tuesday!

My parents are from the Deep South, and they never told me stories about cold like this. Maybe it's because they were born there in the 30s when the South was really hot.
Yeah, I believe it is, for myself anyway. Incredible 360 mountain top views, many tall trees, fresh air and the most incredible water I have ever had. The temps average about 25- 30 from about Dec.15 thru Feb. 15 then it warms up. Of course when the wind gets whipping the wind chill brings those temps down fast! I’m used to those average cold temps in winter time and they do not bother me but if it gets real crazy low with the temp and chill factor I just make sure I’m cozy inside!
Notice that libs never come running when a known conservative area is hit with a major natural disaster. We only pull the wagon that their precious homeless indigents ride in, so what do we matter?
Sounds idyllic. I think most of us Freeps would do anything to live in a place like that. I've been in the city for three years now, and can't tell you how much I miss the country.
I moved to Minot temporarily for the money. I hadn’t experienced anything below -16 prior to this. My HIGH temp is -20. Holy crap.
Thanks so much for telling me. I'm pretty sure this is unusual, and for Heaven's sake, it's only supposed to last for a couple of days at a time. I plan to ask my doctor about it next Saturday, because his immediate kinfolk have lived here in these parts for several generations.
