No, it is impossible to actually observe the past, in the way that we can observe the present.

This is nonsensical. You are looking at light entering your eyes that is billions of years old, the same way light from the Sun that enters your eyes is 8 minutes old. I hardly see the difference. The whole concept of the "present" is relative.

Well, one clear difference is that we can experimentally verify that the light which hits our eyes from the sun really left the sun eight minutes ago. We can’t do that for light from distant stars, so all of our observations based on those sources remain qualified by our unverified speculations as to their source.
