Boehner Is Said to Back Change on Immigration

By MICHAEL D. SHEAR and ASHLEY PARKER Published: January 1, 2014

WASHINGTON — Speaker John A. Boehner of Ohio has signaled he may embrace a series of limited changes to the nation’s immigration laws in the coming months, giving advocates for change new hope that 2014 might be the year that a bitterly divided Congress reaches a political compromise to overhaul the sprawling system.

Mr. Boehner has in recent weeks hired Rebecca Tallent, a longtime immigration adviser to Senator John McCain, the Arizona Republican who has long backed broad immigration changes. Advocates for an overhaul say the hiring, as well as angry comments by Mr. Boehner critical of Tea Party opposition to the recent budget deal in Congress, indicates that he is serious about revamping the immigration system despite deep reservations from conservative Republicans.

Aides to Mr. Boehner said this week that he was committed to what he calls “step by step” moves to revise immigration laws, which they have declined to specify.

But other House Republicans, who see an immigration overhaul as essential to wooing the Hispanic voters crucial to the party’s fortunes in the 2016 presidential election, said they could move on separate bills that would fast-track legalization for agricultural laborers, increase the number of visas for high-tech workers and provide an opportunity for young immigrants who came to the country illegally as children to become American citizens.

Immigration ‘reform’ from the same people who brought you Obamacare Health Care ‘reform’...

What could go wrong?

Make sure you pass the bill first, too, so we can find out what’s in it later...

it’s deeply disturbing when people allow the words of our sworn political opponent (NYT is obviously not our friend)to make us angry at someone that is our established ally.

division is their goal. the only way they can save the senate is to divide us, and many of us are foolishly taking the bait.

Guess there’s no reason for me to vote GOP anymore.

Awaiting Tea Party candidates.

As for the GOP, shove it up your collective smelly Obamaholes.

No, take that back.

Shove Boehner up your collective smelly Obamaholes.

And, GOP, FU to the Nth power, where N is a googol.

The GOPe has been the primary advocate of amnesty for over a decade. I don’t see how they are now caving in to Obama.

The GOP left me, not the other way around. So they best not count on my vote to get elected for dog catcher let alone POTUS.

This would be good news, since many have said that immigration should be tackled item by item, rather than comprehensively.

Immigration ‘reform’

So, for all those out there that are screaming for immigration reform I'd like to you to tell me......what the current immigration policy/requirement?

It's NEVER mentioned in any story.

wow. shocker. :-\

As long as we keep putting liberals in republican clothing and calling them Conservatives we're going to keep getting idiots like boehner. Well... I take that back. This country and it's government is in Hospice. There is nothing the moderates and liberals are willing to do to stop this country from dying. boehner hates you and America as much as the communists do.

Agreed.

Also agree with above poster who asserts that letting NYTimes tell us what’s up is not too smart.

Immigration, for me, is a scorched-earth issue. I’d sooner see the entire GOP, GOPe, the GOP majority in the House, and any potential for majority in the US Senate BURN TO THE GROUND, figuratively. [disclaimer required due to likely retaliation by our compassionate conservative establishment Republicans in Congress]

They do not even deserve the right to mutter ‘American’ under their breath, let alone aloud.

He won’t do anything too big because of the election. I don’t think he wants to upset grassroots voters, but he certainly wants to signal pro-amnesty campaign contributors of his intentions.

The most opportune time to do the dirty work will be after the election in a lame duck session (late November, December 2014).

The GOPe wants to ride the Obamacare train to political victory with conservatives sucked into voting for them out of anger and fear.

Then they get to stab the grassroots in the back.

I’ve heard that Boehner has multiple challengers and if that’s true its because the political machine wants it that way so Boehner wins the primary.

Could be. Reagan signed amnesty shortly after the midterms of 1986.

The GOPe wants to ride the Obamacare train to political victory with conservatives sucked into voting for them out of anger and fear.

That's the way of modern politics -- vote for me, I suck less than the other guy.
