More trouble for Target after 40,000 gift cards sold over the holidays fail to work

Target is in hot water again after it emerged that a reported 40,000 gift cards sold over the holidays were not properly activated - leaving them with no value.

The latest debacle comes just a week after the retail giant suffered a massive data breach which saw hackers access information to an estimated 40 million customer credit and debit cards.

Now the store is under fire for scanning the wrong code on gift cards when handing them over to shoppers, meaning that the value was not activated, KMSP in Minnesota reported.

It means that when the recipients of the cards head to the register intending to use them, they will apparently have no value.

...

However, it may be a struggle to get through on the phone line as the store is experiencing a high volume of calls, KMSP reported.

One shopper affected by the debacle is Jennifer Sheldon, from Camillus, New York, who told the Syracuse Post-Standard that she was shocked when her $200 gift card failed to swipe at the store.

Sheldon, a mother receiving disability payments, had received the card from 'a needy family Christmas giveaway', she said, and 'felt on top of the world like I had just won the lottery'.

She went to Target hoping to stock up on milk, eggs, juice, diapers for her baby, clothes for her daughter and a toaster oven - but was told that the card had no value on it.

I'm guessing computer issues. The credit card theft is also computer issues... so I'm beginning to wonder if perhaps they've recently outsourced their IT operations to CGI (the outfit that "built" the Obamacare mess) or something.

“A Target spokesperson told MailOnline that the number of cards affected was less that one per cent of those sold over the holiday period, while KMSP put the number at 40,000.”

So only a small percentage of them were processed incorrectly.

My question is, based on the sentence below from the article, if the wrong code was given out, how did it happen only 40,000 times? You know they had to sell more than 40,000 gift cards.

“Now the store is under fire for scanning the wrong code on gift cards when handing them over to shoppers, meaning that the value was not activated, KMSP in Minnesota reported.”

I’m wondering if it isn’t part of the original hack. Target really doesn’t have much choice but to honor unactivated cards, so if you’ve got counterfeit cards ready to go......

Seems that Target became a target to be targeted.

Hmm. Who is Target a target of cyber mischief makers? One glitch would be thing. But now gift cards, too. Somebody or some bodies really don’t like them.

I was in Target yesterday, and I noticed that they had a whole lot of unsold Christmas merchandise.

Sounds like some or several tech people are “targeting” Target...

These are the same people that support ObamaCare. Most of the Black Friday Walmart protesters were pro-Target, holiday-Tree, anti-Walmart, MSNBC liberal types.

Fourty seems a unlucky number for target.

Remember Target is the Dayton family, and for more evidence of incompetence, see “Gov. Mark Dayton”. He’s the Sebelius of Minnesota.

They are CONSTANTLY advertising on CareerBuilder for IT people in their Illinois warehouse. My guess is high turnover.

You might as well give your money to the DNC and pro-liberal causes. Target is the preferred place to shop by liberals. Of course there are exceptions such as consumers like you who go where the product is but the typical Target shopper (like an MSNBC viewer) will go without the product before they would support a place such as Walmart.

Typically, Target refuses to allow Boys Scouts to raise money on their property, denies the employee to say "Christmas" unlike Walmart their "religion" section of books have everything BUT Christian books with a majority of them being of Islam and Buddah and the non-fictions are about Oprah or Michelle Obama.

A relative of mine who worked in shipping & receiving at the local Target was offered a days pay to join the Black Friday anti-Walmart protest. He didn't go but a few of his co-workers did. He since found another job.

So only a small percentage of them were processed incorrectly.

Target's spokesman sounds like a Democrat with the "less than one percent" effected comment. He can minimize it all he wants but to those effected it's huge. That's 40,000 people upset, embarrassed & very disappointed when they get to the cash register.

They must have a major problem in their computer department. I rarely go to Target and am considering cutting them out altogether after these two recent fiascoes.

about four years ago, our family received a free artificial tree fully decorated from Target... the decorations are beautiful glass ornaments... over 200 of them, valued at 5 to 10 dollars each... they take their Christmas trees down a few days before Christmas, and being that they do not sell the same ornaments year after year, they donate the decorated floor models to local churches... our church received two... however, all the church members had already gotten their trees... one of the leaders made call after call to the church members, only to be told each family already had a tree... he finally called us, and i said we had not gotten our tree yet... we had been really busy that year... and so we were blessed with the tree! the other tree was kept by the church... :)

The number 40 seems to be a re-occurring thing in the Holy Bible.

Proly just a coincidence.
