A renowned Wall Street tycoon gave away his entire $800 million fortune before falling to his death in a suicide jump this week.

Just noticed how the piece read. Um, “..falling to his death in a suicide jump..”. What brilliant writing.

"....my fweakin luck after he gave me a few mill....he would've landed on me"
Maybe they believe that they will finally be happy, once they become very wealthy.
Old age and ill health get us all.
It wasn't the jump that did him in... it was the abrupt stop.
“He gave the last $100 million of his money to not-for-profit environmental advocacy group the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF).”
A pathetic waste of money.
A pathetic waste of money.
Plus his last act was to make a big mess that had to be cleaned up outta somebody's environment.
“Wilson was married to his only wife Marilyn for 35 years before they divorced. He is survived by his brother William, 88. He had no children. “
It is the War on Men. Apparently a devoted husband without a taste for young floosies (800 million can buy a lot of floosies for a single man). No children. It’s not like he could not have bought a surrogate wife to have children if he wanted them.
But apparently, modern society and New York City women did not hold any attraction for him.
I am guessing he was a decent guy for which liberal NYC had no use for.
Apparently $800 million was not enough to make him happy.
That's not where happiness comes from.
Hence the suicide.
He was 87 and had suffered a stroke. Nothing in the article implies he did not lead a happy life. Here is where he spent his money:
“Other beneficiaries of Wilsons money include the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, the World Monuments Fund, the Nature Conservancy and the Wildlife Conservation Society, each of which received $100 million before Wilson passed away.
“I realised that Catholic schools were closing all over the country, and Bill Gates probably didnt have enough money to save them,” Wilson told Bloomberg News in 2010 when asked about his decision to donate such a large sum to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York.”
hmmm . not sure I agree with your analysis. You make a couple of assumptions that you have no evidence to back up based on the linked article.
Perhaps either his wife or him were unable to have their own biological children. It does not mean his wife did not want children of her own..she may have been unable. Also there are people who believe surrogacy is unethical and immoral. He and his wife may have been among them. To fault the wife for his lack of children is unfair and frankly is reminiscent of medieval Europe.
You have no idea whether he was a devoted husband or a philanderer. There is simply no way to know. The article gives no reason for the divorce.
Most likely he became depressed after suffering a stroke and a divorce. Depression is very common in the older population. He did not want to be a burden on his family and/or society and rightly or wrongly decided to give away his fortune as he saw fit and end his life.
apparently he was gay ( probably reason for divorce) and an atheist should have fit right in in liberal NY..( per NY times article discussing his death)
Money may not buy happiness but it can make the downpayment.
Gates doesn’t care about Catholics. In fact, he and his wife support abortion.
The secret to happiness is found in Aristotle’s ethics ... simple things like ... “patience is a virtue” ... and etc ... See it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aristotelian_ethics
Even post stroke he had the cogent ability to reason and direct his plans. What a waste giving to those enviromental groups. Hope he found salvation though Christ but the planned suicide doesn’t sound like it. Give him credit for giving his fortune away although that won’t get him into heaven. Oh well...he was his own death panel.
If you are an aetheist, why give money to the Catholic church ?
