WASHINGTON - More than 1 million Americans are bracing for a harrowing, post-Christmas jolt as extended federal unemployment benefits come to a sudden halt this weekend, with potentially significant implications for the recovering U.S. economy. A tense political battle likely looms when Congress reconvenes in the new, midterm election year.
For families dependent on cash assistance, the end of the federal government's "emergency unemployment compensation" will mean some difficult belt-tightening as enrollees lose their average monthly stipend of $1,166.
Jobless rates could drop, but analysts say the economy may suffer with less money for consumers to spend on everything from clothes to cars. Having let the "emergency" program expire as part of a budget deal, it's unclear if Congress has the appetite to start it anew.
An estimated 1.3 million people will be cut off when the federally funded unemployment payments end Saturday.

Here's my response.
Losing? The benefits are expiring. It should come as no surprise.

"Unemployment Rolls Drop By 1.3 Million"
The unemployment rate will drop to below 7%. These unemployed souls will no longer be a statistic just the lost and forgotten.
Maybe they will finally get a job. And look for a 2016 candidate that will generate jobs, instead of vote-buying welfare handouts.
When I and 5 million others lost our health insurance because of him, Obama said it was a “small percentage”, or in essence, no big deal. This was only one million, an even smaller percentage.
Light to moderate civil unrest are expected in the inner cities growing to all out riots in the evening
Republicans fault.
I’m sure that a lot of them will be signing up for Social Security Disability- over the past 5 years SSD is the largest growing sector of our economy. More new SSD recipients than job holders during the time of Obama.
They must share some blame. They allowed Obama and his golems to run roughshod over the Constitution, the American People and our culture. Barely a peep or a fight. So, yes - it is (partly) the Republicans fault.
There a lot of people, I have worked with a number, who have destroyed their bodies working hard every day. I still have contact with some that though they are in constant pain would rather continue to work every day and bring home a paycheck. The jobs for them are not there any more, and their options are limited. They may have no choice but to apply for SSD to survive. The money received on SSD is NOT comparable to a pay check Or the feeling of worth one receives with it. I get tired of some on this site constantly tarring everyone with the same “lazy free loader” brush.
Ah, I see you took me seriously. Republicans fault will be the media meme to deflect attention away from the dismal Obama economy but that’s about the extent of their culpability.
Go to North Dakota. Lots of jobs there.
Have them go ask the UAW for some US taxpayer money.
I get tired of the broad brush strokes too, but you have to admit, the entire system is loaded with waste, fraud and abuse.
It’s really welfare after the first 26 weeks.
Must cut up an onion so I can work up a tear.
Mentioned this to my Sister-in-law and she said the charity she works for will be over run with people now.
