A new gun law coming in 2014 has gun owners stocking up on long guns before a new registry begins.
Even though the law is at least temporarily boosting his bottom line, Just Guns owner John Deaser isnt a fan. He says requiring people to register their rifles and shotguns is an unnecessary invasion of privacy.
In the last week of 2013, he says sales of long guns are up 30 to 50 percent.
The registry goes into effect on Jan. 1, and would require long gun owners to register their weapons like handgun owners already do. It would track the make, model and serial number of the gun, as well as the person who owns it.
Previously dealers would destroy personal information on long gun owners after a background check had been completed. Now theyll register those purchases with the state.
Supporters of the new law say it will improve public safety and help keep guns out of the wrong hands.
Deaser says many of his customers are stocking up on long guns now rather than waiting until 2014 when they would have to register.
These are law-abiding citizens, he said. Theyre not trying to beat the system or anything like that. They just dont want to be tracked.
Avid hunter Jason Gudgel bought a shotgun for his son on Thursday, but he says it has nothing to do with the new law. He says the timing is because of the holidays.
I teach my son hunter safety, he said. We do it as a sport. We hunt pheasant and deer, and thats what theyre supposed to be meant for.
"Im a 3rd generation Californian, and I left 20 years ago. Nice weather only gets you so far."
I am also 3rd generation, my grandparents came to California on wagon trains, met and married in "Hangtown" (Placerville). They must be rollin' over in their graves by what they see now.
If you are a CCW permit holder an FFL doesn't need to phone in the 4473 but you still have to fill out the stupid form. (Chops a lot of time off the purchase and with the right dealer can save you bucks if you're willing to negotiate.)
Then again, you don't really need to have a CCW permit to carry unless you want to carry in other states, in an establishment that serves alcohol or within 200 free of a school. Otherwise you're free to carry, open or concealed, without a "permit". Life is simple here and the crime rate is still low - except where the Federal Government arms the drug gangs.
Oh sorry I was thinking you were posting of buying a gun out of state.
Should have checked your homepage.
I'm a history buff. It came to remind me of 4th century Gaul. 50 to 100 years from now MS13 will sack Sacramento. 1700 year from now they'll be the French.
I went back to Cali to visit the family in 2010. For the five days I was there, I felt like I was in some sort of hallucinogenic nightmare. I mean, the place creeped me out that bad.
My discomfort didn't stop until the wheels went up on the plane back home to Texas.
“Shame what happened to CA. I cant talk too much crap about the state, as it is FRs home state. But used to be a time when the state kicked total ass. Now its just a semi-3rd world nation.”
Yep, they are a long way from Jeff Cooper, Jack Weaver and the Bear Valley days.
I live in NY, and the only article I have been able to find on Little Andy Cuomo’s SAFE Act registration is that they expect about only about a 10% compliance. There are NO official numbers that I can find. It’s almost like they are hiding the fact that the people are not complying with Little Andy’s edicts.
That is fantastic....never saw that one before.
I hear ya...
I feel safer already. This will certainly prevent gun crimes.
On a serious note I sure do miss where I lived in California. I grew up in South Lake Tahoe and lived in the Sierra Nevada foothills while going to college. I lived in Moss Landing, Ventura, Ojai. Lovely places. BUT, now, as a business owner, it would be pure business suicide to move back there. Everything under my pillow is illegal in the state. The state is going to go bankrupt. The politics are purely socialist to make the coastal overlords feel good about themselves. Now, the only time I go back, is on a layover out of SFO or LAX or visit family that hasn’t escaped.
