After a hard-fought battle, Illinois residents next month can begin applying for permits to carry concealed guns in public. But those who do could face another challenge: figuring out where it's legal to carry a firearm and where having a gun could land them in jail.
While the Illinois statute lays out nearly two dozen places where guns are prohibited including schools, public parks, government offices and hospitals it also includes caveats that might seem confusing, even contradictory, particularly to novice gun carriers.
For example, the law prohibits guns at events where there is a large gathering of people, like neighborhood street festivals. But it allows people with guns to walk through a public gathering on the way home, to work or to their car.
That means, according to some firearms instructors, that people could legally walk through the crowd at the South Side Irish Parade with a gun tucked in their belt but they couldn't hang around and watch the performances.

The ambiguity in the law did not happen by accident.
ya had to know they would not make it easy, and getting caught in the wrong place with a firearm was going to be so harsh people would chose not want to carry.
There is more work to be done in IL.
Idiot politicians.......do they actually get paid to make up these crappy rules?
Keeping guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens works very well.
No, it didn’t. They made it deliberately confusing and contradictory on purpose. How else can law abiding gun owners be picked up and prosecuted for innocent mistakes?
Then the anti crowd can tell us all about how many licemsees committed “crimes”.
NO...crafty, underhanded and dirty.
Do they actually get paid to make up these crappy rules?
YES, that's a given!
Yes, that’s what they’re trying for. They ned some crisis’.
--the most ridiculous thing about the whole Illinois situation , IMHO is that immediately to the north, Wisconsin has now had concealed carry for over two years with over 200,000 permittees with so far only one or two "incidents" (at least that have made the media), neither of which resulted in any harm to anyone---
--obviously Illinois politicians (from the urban areas anyway) don't learn from the experience of neighboring areas or else have another agenda in mind--
The article is not too bad, in that they present a couple of viewpoints. It is better than many seen in the past.
There is at least one factual error. It says there are 19 “shall issue” states, when in fact, there are 41.
“...figuring out where it’s legal to carry a firearm...”
Rumor has it Uncle Mike’s and Galco are developing a special “azz crack” holster... as that will be the only legal place a gun owner can conceal-carry a pistol.
Of course they do...they were elected to do just that. When the electorate of IL start taking their responsibility seriously then thatll all change. Its not the pols who are the problem, its the electorate.
By Jove, I think you’ve got it:
There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.

Yeah, how big is a “large gathering?” Five, ten, a hundred?
“Concealed” means concealed!
Carry when and where you need to, and don’t be an idiot about it.
Follow your training and don’t expose it unless you intend to use it.
The difference is that in Illinois, the Mob, the cops, and the politicians are indistinguishable, and they don’t like the intended victims to be armed.
