Oh the intolerant tolerance brigade...
Like just about every news outlet in the country, NBC 15 in Madison featured the latest on the Duck Dynasty controversy involving the show's star Phil Robertson and comments he made about homosexuality to GQ magazine.
Robertson was suspended by A&E for his remarks that some considered bigoted and intolerant. But in NBC 15's coverage of the story, morning anchor Christine Bellport managed to insert her own biases and bigotry into the coverage.
BELLPORT: I mean I'm sorry to say. When you look at the guy, I'm not surprised with the comments he made. You know what I mean? I'm not surprised. And I don't really know why anyone else is surprised.
SHORTINO: Have you seen the show?
BELLPORT: No.
In the wake of Bellport's comments, NBC 15 posted an apology on their Facebook page that reads:
The comments made today on The Morning Show by anchor Christine Bellport regarding the Duck Dynasty story do not reflect the views of NBC 15 or the NBC 15 newsroom. NBC 15 News Director Russ Bruhn has spoken with Christine about her comments. Keeping with company policy, this is a matter that will be handled internally. We understand the importance of basing our reporting and our anchor comments on facts and not opinions. NBC 15 apologizes for the comments and regrets that Christine offended viewers and Mr. Robertson.
Robertson's comments have set off a firestorm about the First Amendment, religious liberty, tolerance and intolerance, and the limits of free speech in American culture.
She is the only bigot.

This is why whenever I’m called a racist, bigot, etc. I merely reply, “I know you are but what am I?” this simplistic, yes, childish response gets undr their thin skin like nothing else. Instead of facing up to their bigotry, they need to project these attitudes on others. Is it because of some superiority complex? Or they’re too cowardly to face up to their own prejudices? Or both?

Phil Robertson has a bachelor’s degree in physical Education, a master’s degree in education, taught school for several years, is widely respected as an elder in the church, has a close loving family, and has parlayed his family’s business to the point that their personal fortune is about 400,000,000 dollars. How does Miss Bellport stack up?

I’ve always had a problem with this... She made the comments ON THE AIR. The apology should not be made by a nameless, faceless person on their website to what is most likely a much smaller audience. The apology should come from her, on the air, during the same time of day tomorrow that her original comments were made. After that she should be suspended indefinitely since that seems to be the way these matters are dealt with on televsion these days. So glad I don’t work in the media anymore.
