The layoffs come three weeks after some of the sub shop's employees protested for better wages and benefits. BY MEG GRAHAM
A River North sandwich shop gave its employees an unwelcome Christmas surprise on Sunday night, firing them all by email.
The 20 employees of Snarfs Sub Shop at 600 W. Chicago Ave. received the email last night around 5 p.m. Grid obtained it this morning. It reads as follows.
1. Due to increased competition and losses, ownership has decided to consider remodeling and reconcepting the store at 600 West Chicago Ave.
2. The store is closing, effective tomorrow, December 23, 2013 for an unknown period of time for this remodeling and reconcepting.
3. All staff is terminated, effective Monday, December 23, 2013.
4. All staff may apply for unemployment, if eligible.
5. Return any keys and Company property to Will Ravert at 600 West Chicago Avenue on Monday, December 23, 2014 during normal business hours.
6. Payroll will be processed as usual this week and paid on Friday, December 27, 2013.
7. Keep an eye out for the grand opening of the new store.
8. Ownership appreciates your service and wish you well in your new endeavors.
Doug Besant Director of Operations
A Snarfs spokeswoman confirmed the emails contents.
The remodel will include the addition of a burger concept, according to Jill Preston, the restaurants director of marketing. She says the restaurant will be likely closed for more than a month.
The mass firing comes just three weeks after Snarfs employees were striking for higher wages and better benefits. They joined workers of fast-food chains like McDonalds, Subway, Potbelly and others in a broader strike orchestrated by the Workers Organizing Committee of Chicago.
As a result, the restaurant was closed for four days, from Dec. 5 until Dec. 8, Preston says.
Preston denies that last nights terminations are related to the strike. She says the timing of the remodel coincides with the restaurants slowest season.
During the Christmas holiday were pretty slow, she says. The restaurants usually three quarters closed. This does happen to coincide, but this is something weve had planned for awhile.
Members of the Workers Organizing Committee of Chicago gathered at 600 W. Chicago Ave. this morning to call for severance pay and re-employment for the fired Snarfs employees, says Deivid Rojas, communications director for the organization.
Three days before Christmas and not even a call, Rojas says. Its not fair that management and the corporation is treating [employees] this way.
Preston says employees will be allowed to reapply to the restaurant after it reopens.
Ho! Ho! Ho!
Sticking it in their employees' eye. Literally.
Owners apparently don't believe in karma.
To: All Staff
Merry F****g Christmas and don’t come back.
Sincerely,
The Management
Yeah, well...in the words of John Wayne, "Life is hard. It's even harder if you're stupid."
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
Now you will have more time for what you really like to do...Protesting Against Your Job!
Dimwits!
Well I’m sure these enterprising employees will pool their resources and open their own place, right?
Or become 99ers with EBT, etc
Tough choice...
Isn’t free market capitalism wonderful ? You get to do what ever you want with your business, Karma be damned !
I bet the employees didn’t believe in karma either.
Three days before Christmas and not even a call, Rojas says. Its not fair that management and the corporation is treating [employees] this way.
Reap what you sow....
Maybe they could ask the Community Organizer group to pay their salaries....
That’s what you call a big dish of sour cream pie right in the kisser!! Eat It, Pal!
...for restaurant hourly workers ?
Good luck with that...
re-employment for the fired Snarfs employees,
Maybe if you were not a bunch of ungrateful union stooges...
I doubt the employees gave their boss any prior notice before going out on strike, shutting the store down for four days.
Those employees cost the company money from the shutdown and from the negative publicity.
Workers Organizing Committee of Chicago, an offshoot of “Arise Chicago”, part of the SEIU’s “Fight for 15!” National Campaign.
(The Dems big hope for the 2014 elections)
An SEIU/OFA “Community Organizing” group (Socialist agitators)
It’s tough to keep track of all of these COI/OFA/SEIU Orgs, they pop up like roaches, with all of the same few people.
Beginning on January 1, 2014, the law clearly states that any employer having 50 or more employees must provide group insurance coverage for those employees or pay a hefty fine for each one. That’s what the law says, and beginning on January 1, each of their employees can file suit against them in federal court, regardless of any contrary directives Obama has issued. The law is the law.
Sure they do. That was instant karma for those dumba**es who decided to picket their employer instead of doing their jobs. Karma's a bitch.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
I have got to get a poster of John Wayne saying that!

So sorry, comrades!
