The U.S. military is moving about 150 Marines from Spain to Africa, most likely Djibouti, to be prepared to go into South Sudan to either provide security for the U.S. Embassy in Juba or to help evacuate the estimated 100 U.S. citizens believed to be there, two U.S. military officials told CNN's Barbara Starr on Monday.

Exactly. I spent many days & nights tromping around the Zambales mountains in the Philippines, practicing rescues of "an American ambassador & staff taken hostage by XYZ rebel group."
And Okinawa.
And Camp Lejeune.

Tet, Saigon, 1968. Sappers, failure of indigenous personnel, lack of command and control. I won't even mention logistics...embassy security...
Sheesh.

Just an obervation....Africans aren't showing a real lot of talent for running western-style governments. Perhaps the only choices are colonial governments or dictators or killing each other off.
We should probably get out of the way and let all of Africa go the way of South Africa with its end of colonial rule.

Well, McNamara was never CiC, not that I liked the SOB.
His "McNamara Line" was the stupidest plan I ever heard of - and I served 13 months on the DMZ supporting it.

#3 son is a Marine and his battalion is currently on a MEU aboard the Boxer and has been in Djibouti for the last month or so.
He’s been very circumspect about things on those rare occasions we get to talk to him.
