ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed a law requiring manufacturers of thermostats with mercury to collect their old temperature controls in an effort to keep mercury out of the environment.

The measure requires they establish collection programs and in 2015 start filing annual reports on collections.

Remember tincture of iodine? Detergent with Phosphates ? Model airplane glue with acetone ? Carbon Tetrachloride ? Darvons ?

We still get detergent with phosphates. Get the commercial version at GFS or any other institutional supply house. The REAL Cascade works GREAT.

I recall as a kid we'd somehow get a hold of a small bead of mercury on occasion and we used to play with it.And after all that there's nothing wrong...nothing wrong with me....nothing aaaaarrrrrgggggh!

Hell, we had a pint bottle of it. That stuff was fun to play with.

I did the same thing. I found it cool to pool mercury in the cradle of my palm. But I have since wised up. Now at an older age, I switched to Gallium. It’s much safer. It also does really cool things like eat through aluminum. You can make copies of keys with it too.

"However, be careful of rubbing elbows with politicians who display odd characteristics. :)"

I dare you to name one who doesn't! ;-)

(I'd rather take my chances with mercury...)

NY is more stringent than Singapore without the cleanliness and the tax break.

What freaking hell holes liberals make.

I swallowed about a gram of elemental mercury when I was about 13, and have had acute mercury vapor poisoning twice from being careless when doing some metallurgical work as an adult...
And I’ll put my IQ and my overall health up against Cuomo’s any time.

Elemental mercury is pretty harmless. You don’t want to ingest much mercury chloride or other mercury compounds, especially halides, or eat grains treated with it, or eat meat that ate the grains treated with it.

But I’d rather live above an open vat of mercury than be governed by a Democrat. .

You forgot a few things... they’ve taken your dishwasher and laundry detergents (phosphates), your dishwashers and washing machines (not enough water to do the job), your toilets, your REAL non-ethanol gasoline, your dignity at airports, your privacy, your children to be indoctrinated at government schools, and as much money as they can squeeze out of you.

Did I leave anything out?

That old mercury in thermostats is SEALED in glass.

That old asbestos is SEALED in linoleum floor tiles.

“Broken thermostats can release mercury into the air.”

Yeah, if you smash it with a hammer, but why would you?

The mercury is encased in a sealed glass tube, with wire contacts on each end to act as a mechanical switch when the bimetallic spring attached to it responds to the high and low temperature the user sets. Cut in - Cut out. The mercury completes the circuit as it tilts down - you get heating or cooling, and once the temperature desired is achieved, tilts up and shuts off.

I heard many years ago they wanted to ban mercury switches because they could be used as a detonator - put a bomb on a plane, and as it ascended at a certain angle, the mercury would roll across and complete the circuit.

I guess the point I’m trying to make is that such ‘stats are innocuous when used as intended...

Yes... when they are done taking everything else you hold dear, they will take and consume your everlasting soul.

Broken thermostats can release mercury into the air.

No they can't. Liquid Mercury is basically harmless.

Now fluorescent bulbs, on the other hand....

About time! The silicon in my thermostats have been burning out separating the glass from the ceramic base. Scary stuff!

The largest mercury mine in the world in the mid-1800s was a few miles from downtown San Jose, California. It was started to extract mercury for gold extraction in Chile and later supplied much of the mercury for gold extraction in the Sierras. The New Idria mercury mine in San Benito County also provided much of the mercury for the Sierra gold rush. Recovery of mercury was not very efficient and much of it washed downstream and into our streams, rivers and ultimately to the SF Bay. The tailings piles at New Idria are still a huge mess and cause a lot of acid runoff. Mercury production at the New Almaden mine in San Jose ended only in 1976. About 110,000 TONS of elemental mercury were produced in the Coast Range from the 1840s to the 1970s. Much of that found it’s way into the environment. It really isn’t a pretty picture.

And... Are they goin’ to confiscate all of the thermometers that most people have in their homes?

Liberals are devoid of common sense when they write and enact such inane legislation.
