With Target already reeling from a massive hack that left up to 40 million credit and debit cards compromised, The New York Times now reports that all that data has been pouring into the black market since the break-in. With the breach taking place between Black Friday and December 15th, criminals on hundreds of illicit card-selling markets have likely had access to consumer information for weeks to date.
"Guests will not be held responsible for fraud"
Security experts, including security blogger Brian Krebs, say that criminals sell stolen credit cards in bulk, with individual cards going for as little as a quarter or as high as $100 depending on the credit limit. With that kind of access, they can then burn the information onto counterfeit cards or use them to purchase gift cards that siphon off the victim's account.
Target issued a statement today reassuring customers that they will not be held responsible for any credit or debit fraud. While the company states that it hasn't received many fraud complaints since news of the breach broke, it has given affected account numbers to credit card companies. In addition, the company is offering a 10 percent discount on in-store purchases evidently to curry good will among customers.

Target should ask for help from their favorite charity, Planned Parenthood.
“Afraid of ID thieves? Shop at a secure Walmart near you! Low Prices everyday....now with more security!”
A friend had his data stolen in Target. Thieves charged $3,000 before he realized it. He called the company, which sent a new card. But they have to post the charges and he has to call each time to have them removed. They said that was the only way to do it.
Any techies out there....how did Target not know for so long? Aren’t there supposed to be checks on the security of the system very often?
Maybe the Salvation Army could be of help?
Opp’s maybe not! “Target banned all Salvation Bell Ringers
from their premises.” Have a Merry Christmas.
Target opened at 8PM on Thanksgiving Day. At 11 PM...on the way home from Thanksgiving dinner, my local Target is on the way..I decided to stop in because they had a fantastic price on a Nikon camera..but they were sold out....the usual Black Friday crap..they advertise these great deals..but there are only a small number of items at each store...so I was “spared” having my information hacked...
I notice the Target employees have stopped bugging me to get their Redcard.....
That happened to me. Luckily I had the alerts put on my account that notified me. However, your friend is correct. You have to wait until the charges move from pending to posted.
Cash is king and safe.
Important: don’t use a debit card! Use a credit card.
Protection is much better with a credit card since the charge is billed against the credit card company first and then billed to the customer whereas the debit card deducts the charge directly from a person’s checking account and “good luck getting the refund.”
The CC company monitors “strange” charges and will contact the card holder almost immediately if there is a suspicious charge.
There has been a curious lack of information about who did this. The early stories said “inside job,” then nothing else.
“Cash is king and safe.”
Amen brother. This demonstrates that the cashless society is fraught with peril. Those relying solely on digital currency will be subject to theft by regular criminals, as well as the government criminals.
We need to get rid of plastic and go bio-metric. Maybe something on our hands or foreheads..........
This makes me very glad that Target didn’t have anything I wanted when I went in there a couple weeks ago.
Seriously, they need to make identity theft and whatever they call this, DP or at least LWOP crimes.
Corporations are extremely slow to move. Once customers noticed the charges, its reported to either the bank or to Target depending on if the charges hit a debit or hit a target credit account. Once they were notified, they begin an investigation. God knows how long it took to go from A to B to C.
Once the lawsuit starts, and you better believe it will, discovery will hopefully reveal Target’s IT Security practices and what they did or did not do. Target likely doesnt handle their own IT Sec and probably outsourced it and did not want to pay to get the job done correctly. I have seen this over and over and over again. Nobody wants to pay for technology and many businesses think they can cut corners because they have little to no understanding or respect for technology.

Say what you will about VISA but I have one through my credit union and they have been fantastic about catching fraudulent charges in the past along with my credit union.
I only use a credit card, never a debit. Simply pay it off every month.
I was thinking about the head or hands thing yesterday. Could just be your account with password that you remember in your head or carry around in your hand—on your smartphone.
I predict cash will be outlawed within 20 years. That’s why they’re doing so many design changes with them.
