I wouldn’t worry. The U.S. has a stellar reputation of caring for it’s servicemen made ill by environmental factors concurrent to their duty. Agent Orange, Gulf War Syndrom...uh, nevermind.
One year is a very short period of time to be seeing the effects of residual radiation. Something isn’t kosher, I bet the ambulance chasers met the ship the moment it got back to port.

The are saying it was in the water. However, it was detected in the air and the carriers were moved away. They were 100 miles offshore at the time. Hard to believe that there was any substantial radiation in the drinking water. They would not be taking in new water if in a cantaminated area.

Where is the reports of the, I presume, hundreds or thousands of sick Japanese people who have been ridden with cancer?

That’s what I’m thinking. The USS Reagan’s crew complement is around 5700. 50 members of the crew are reporting radiation related illnesses, which would be less than 1% of the crew. How does that percentage compare against the cancer rates of the general population?

It certainly was the responsibility of the US navy to do its own monitoring wherever we sent our soldiers.
Japan had a software program called SPEEDI which it said would be used in the event of a problem at a nuclear power plant. SPEEDI would continuous track weather conditions and, in the event of a disaster, calculate the direction of the radioactive plume(s) released by the power plant and predict toxicity of the plumes (how radioactive they were). When Fukushima reactors failed, SPEEDI produced projections but Japan never released them to the public saying much later “We felt we didn’t want to.”
For that reason, many people in the vicinity of Fukushima didn’t know where to go when the explosions were occurring so they headed North-West in hopes that this would bring them out of the direction of the radioactive fallout. They basically camped there in garages and anywhere they could for few days before government officials showed up and made them move from the location because of high levels of radiation. They had unknowingly headed in the exact direction of the plume and basically camped in the fallout because they had zero information from the government.
This apparently is what happened for the aircraft carrier which headed into a radioactive plume. The carrier would be able to detect radiation once within the plume but would not have been able to know that they were heading strait into it. Once the carrier knew it was detecting fallout, which way to head to get out of it and how fast does a carrier move? They may have had a hard time getting out of it and it might have been slow. Then the carrier ordered personnel to scrub the deck without sufficient protective gear, telling them it was safe. This isn’t unusual in disasters because it isn’t really feasible to keep radioactive decontamination going in close quarters - suits for everybody, radiation training for everybody, decontamination stations for workers etc.
If Japan had shared SPEEDI data (if that had “felt like it”) then their population would have known where NOT to go, as would the carrier. It was the whole purpose of SPEEDI. This happens alot in nuke “events”, when it comes down to it, the “protections” nuclear power plant operators promise the public are inadequate and then when something happens, they are not used (e.g., the local prefectures all had iodine for children (thyroid protection) but they were ordered not to distribute it to the public when Fukushima went boom) because it means the nuclear power operators have failed and are liable. So they didn’t distribute SPEEDI Data (the data looked too “bad” and they didn’t want the public to “panic”) and they ordered affected areas not to distribute emergency iodine to the children (one mayor did it anyway, against direct orders). TEPCO/Japan may have been afraid that if locals saw how bad the plume was, nearby Tokyo might want to evacuate. So any available tools to warn the public are then kept from the public to avoid “panic.”
The carriers knew cone they were receiving radiation fallout but once the ship is coated with fallout, I don’t know how well their sensers would help them know where to go to get clean air (the sensors would still be reading radiation from the fallout adhered to the ship) and they would have a hard time knowing how severe it is - there were 31 isotopes, according to the IAEA released at Fukushima and testing for this stuff is not always instant. There never seems to be an alternative to telling innocent people that they need to go clean this or that area (eg., schoolyard in Japan or the deck of a carrier) and assuring them it won’t hurt them. It’s unknown how it will affect them, someone needs to do it and it’s not feasible to carry and train with the “right” equipment, and there’s always the concern the public will “panic.” They may have ordered the deck scrubbed to help their radiation equipment by removing background “noise” so they could work on getting out or staying out of the plume(s). What surprised me is I read that the contamination made it into their drinking water. Is it that ships process wash water (showers) and are not equipped to remove isotopes so it wound up as drinking water?

Japan met with representatives from Russia and later would report that the Japanese were “Learning The Lessons Of Chernobyl.” Note that the Soviets made it illegal for physicians to report any death as radiation related for the first 3 years after the explosion. So then Japan made it illegal for physicians in surrounding areas to see patients from Fukushima without prior authorization.
The lid has been kept on and has recently been formalized with new legislation )http://ex-skf.blogspot.com/2013/12/ot-obama-administration-welcomes.html) to, among other goals, silence dissemination of information re health effects of Fukushima.
That leaves us with trying to wade through accounts that are not deemed “official” and that’s tough to do. We do know that thyroid cancer is several times the normal rate for children in the area but since Fukushima fallout doesn’t leave a marker on the thyroid, people are saying it’s just that detection is enhanced therefore finding thyroid cancer many times the normal rate is increased etc. In other words, “NOTHING TO SEE HERE, MOVE ALONG!” But they won’t be able to keep the lid on forever. They seem to be trying the Chernobyl tactic of fading it from the public eye - note that many nuke apologists still insist there’s no proof that radiation is harmful etc. while the citizens of Belarus continue to suffer and die as a result. No the lid won’t stay on forever.
If the story’s true, the Navy didn’t do the protective measures.
Just in time for them to be medically retired and then find out their benefits were cut.

They will tell you that not one person has died or gotten sick from Fukushima. They will even tell you that Radiation is good for you.
